Travellers...
Why do Travellers have such a bad reputation In the UK ?
Yesterday Boy Dog goes berserk out In the garden and I go out there to find 2 young teenagers leaning over my gate.
The Puppies were with Mum sunning themselves on the garden steps by the gate.
I have never seen these two girls In my life before.
I didn't react straight away but asked them where they had come from and who they were given our lane Is a private road. They told me they were staying with the Travellers at the end of the village.
One asks me how much the puppies are and even despite me telling them they were all spoken for, one offers me £20 adding she'll take the puppy now and bring £20 later In the week. Yeah right !!!!
But Instead of accepting that there was no way on Gods earth I was handing one over, they just kept on and on and on.
I am still trying to be polite at this stage and make my excuses to go back In the house scooping the puppies up.
Then they ask me If they can call the next day to come Inside my house to play with the puppies... Errr NO because I have never seen you In my life before !!!
I am still remaining polite at this stage but then one spies the racing bike leant up against my wall and offers me £5 for It promising to being the money round later.
I ask ' Why exactly would I pay £200 for a bike and then sell It to you for £5 ?
Instead of accepting that, she went on and on and on again literally badgering the life out of me.
So now, for my puppies to be out In the sun, I've had to put a padlock round my garden gate.
I am sure not all Travellers are like this but I can understand now why some have a dim vie of them.

Hope your fence isn't easy to hop over.
I think that racing bike might be history if it is.

It Is reasonably easy yes and worse, because the lane is a private road we have no street lighting at night.
I've moved the bike Into the garage which Is locked at all times and yesterday, I did point out the cctv camera's trained on the garden gate.
I just don't like having to be that suspicious of anyone and live like that.

Funny thing..................but apparently our Travellers originated in the same place your other favourite people come from, India and surrounding areas.

You see, there's the Irony...
I have Sikh's, Hindu's and Muslims In my Immediate area and I wouldn't think twice about not leaving my bike or gardening tools out In the front garden.
That's the point of my OP.... the behaviour of some Travellers makes you sooooo suspicious that you are suddenly locking everything away.

You're thinking of the romany gypsies who are a distinct group. There are also english irish and Scottish travellers who originate in people forced off the land by all the enclosure acts and tenant farmers replaced by sheep and cattle who didn't want to settle in the cities and became itinerant workers. Land clearances took place all over europe as we industrialised and also farming became more mechanised with less need for manual labourers. A lot also emigrated to the colonies where they seem to have done quite well.
Nowadays we have the hippies as well who are another sub group.

I don't know about the differences between Romany and our so called travellers, I do know some of the diddycoy language or whatever they call it is closely linked.
What brought it home to me, was finding out that when travellers pass water(Pee) they go for a parnie.
I had earlier been taught by an Indian, that hot and cold water were called (Sounds like) tanta parnie, and grand parnie, so parnie being the common term for water.
I don't know the history, but I should imagine the common or garden hedge wamper, commonly known as modern day Gypsies, not necessarily of noble origins, are a mixed bunch who aspire to be from true traveller stock.
Does any of that make sense ?
