Sport question

Post by Bruv »

Watching the athletics in Moscow and thinking about the technology for football goal line and tennis hawk eye advances.

I wonder why in throwing disciplines they couldn't measure from take off point to the longest or highest point without taking the bar into account.

The triple jump today had a series of foul jumps, but they have the technology to measure the jump alone, from wherever the jumper takes off to where they land.

This would be ideal for Pole vault as many times the bar clearance is obvious, but a trailing limb knocks it down.

In marathons they time each person individually, why not in every event ?
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

Because the event is not just about how high / far you jump but also the technical skill required to time your jump to the line / keep away from the bar.

Take the pole-vault - you might be able to jump a foot higher than the bar but if you do it a foot behind it then you've failed, your technique has let you down. Remove that requirement and it's a totally different sport.

I can understand that, and the tactics in say a distance race.

But in a 100 metres, it's all about time.

The marathon is individually timed, due to the masses crossing the line at different times.

If they want to extend the heights and distances of throws and jumps, I reckon they could have a throw or take off area, that you must perform within, not a line, and change the sport to suit modern day technology...................makes good sense to me.
