Talking of Immigrants...

Post by Oscar Namechange »

This occurred to me after the ban Mikiel thread...

Have you ever had to try so hard not to laugh with foreign friends?

I have has so many of those moments.

One... my Turkish girlfriend had some new denims and I asked her where she got them. 'Quiz' she said. Quiz Quiz? I don't know a shop called Quiz. Yes, she said, Quiz, you know... In the shopping centre. I racked my brains and about an hour later I asked ' Do you mean Q S shop'? Yes darling, Quiz.

Another time I am In my friends shop making a large pot of stew for the workers. I turn to one and say ' Are you Peckish' ? No, I am Turkish.

Learning English is difficult enough. Then there are the idioms and slang that each English speaking country adds to the mix. I recall a very concerned Chinese engineer asking me why he should watch out for black eyes. I was stumped. I asked for context and he told me that he had heard on the radio that it had been a cold night so he should watch out for black eyes. He was understanably confused and I chuckled as I explained that the radio announcer had been warning about frozen road surfaces for which the slang is "black ice".
