Nixon Presidential Library released the last set of Nixon White House tapes on Wednesday, and like many of his tapes released over the last few decades, this set confirms that Nixon was not very enlightened when it came to racial and ethnic minorities.

Johnson wasn't terribly enlightened either. Sign of the times, I guess.

The very nature of politics requires Chameleon-like characteristics. I agree though that Richard Nixon was not a nice person. However, his knack for meanness is apparently what got him to the top of the political ladder, only to be consumed by what got him there and then resign in disgrace, though I doubt Nixon understood the concept of shame well enough to know the difference.

He was smart enough to realize the Chinese had something of value.

I just happened across an article on Salon on Nixon. Apparently there's a new movie coming out on him. Salon interviewed director Penny Lane about certain aspects of Nixon which this movie ventures into that others may have neglected to depict.

What do you think people get wrong about Nixon?

If you just look at one thing — the way he’s represented on film — it’s inaccurate. He wasn’t always venting and awkward and plotting conspiracies in back rooms. I don’t think people are prepared to recognize that, at the time he was president, he was an excellent statesman. He could give a speech, those were some of the greatest speeches ever. He was a human being, and people don’t recognize that. That’s the message of our film — that these are human beings, flawed ones. We have a societal need to turn him into a demon — remember the time this demon was elected? “Our Nixon” director: “He was a human being, and people don’t recognize that” - Salon.com

If anything they should know to burn the tapes.

The current POS in the White House never hesitates to use race to advance his goals.

President Nixon was a man of his times, I'm not sure he can be criticized in retrospect since he could scarcely guess where history was going to take us.

Of all the post-war US presidents I'd rate him the best-intentioned and the one most deserving of thanks. I'd describe him as an honorable politician among a bunch who rarely qualified.

Tyr -

"I'd describe him as an honorable politician"

Today that is an oxymoron. Probably always has been,

Though, you have a point. There was a time when politicos at least strove for an honorable image.

One of the things about Nixon that always made me laugh was that he professed to be a Quaker. It is difficult to imagine someone less Quaker-like in their attitudes and actions.

John Kennedy was a Roman Catholic. Bill Clinton claims Southern Baptist.

Seems to me both religions frown on infidelity to one's wife.

Seems the current occupant of the White House claims Christianity but attends no particular church, no problem there. Consider that in his his first campaign for President he threw his pastor the Rev Wright under the bus, who would want or trust him?

All this not to mention his over all antagonism towards religion and religious people in general.

A real nice guy that Barry.

I've always admired President Nixon.

Come from humble beginnings. Actually worked his way through college, imagine that.

During WW2 joined the Navy. kind of thing any self respecting young American did at the time.

I don't remember, nor am I going to repeat his complete biography here but his consistent stance against the old Soviet Union to me gives him points.

Ran for president lost to the Kennedy guy. Ran for gov of California and was slammed by the press and lost.

Would that keep him down?

Hell NO.

In 1972 he defeated what would probably be a worse president than Jimmy Carter or Barak Obama.

That being George McGovern. For that alone he deserves the thanks of the nation.

To the first question.......the American voter ?

Don't take that personally........... we have elected some duffers over here.

Every American President is famous or infamous, yes I was familiar with him, wasn't he the guy they asked "Would you buy a second hand car off thsi man"? And that the phrase Watergate was created for ?

Politicians and comedians everywhere took part in the bashing. Perhaps the most damaging of attack came from then Vice President Richard Nixon, who speaking on behalf of the administration on March 13th, 1954, he denounced "reckless talk and questionable methods" of McCarthyites. From here it was only a matter of time. On December 2, 1954, the Senate voted to censure McCarthy by a vote of 67 to 22. McCarthy responded with a bitter attack on the Eisenhower administration, and apologized to the American people for urging them to vote for Eisenhower. His health deteriorated, and he began to drink. McCarthy died on May 2, 1957. The official cause of death was acute hepatitis. However, according to a number of sources, it was due to liver cirrhosis.

Oh for God's sake, TD, you are such a cry-baby! I'm saying this AS a friend, because for some reason I have always liked you.

You, civil? Your comments are rarely civil.

For someone who admires George Will (as do I) you persist in sounding off like Rush Limbaugh. This ruins every point you ever make. Why not emulate Mr. Will instead? Do you think an erudite, educated man as he would admire your speech? Hardly. Stop acting like Rush, & for God's sake, quit your faux sensitivity.

Do you want honest, or false conversation?

Hey, it's you who brings your personal story to the forum, not me. If you didn't want it talked about you wouldn't have yourself. If you'd like to you can cease bringing your animus into conversations and try being objective instead. It's your choice, but in the mean time, referring to your anecdotes is open season and not in violation of forum rules.

So I point out that this guy Ahso! makes personal attacks against forum rules and I am a cry baby. That guy can't carry on a civil conversation not only without personal attacks or just being dishonest.

Tell me where I must put up with that crap.

But you should ask yourself if you really want to do that because it might become quite embarrassing for you. And you see, I think racist attitudes are so much more condescending than anything I've ever written. That's a difference between you and I.

I agree with your decision not to take your inquiry any further, though it's too bad you couldn't have walked away like a man instead of hurling insults over your shoulder as you ran. But that's you, isn't it.

Also, I notice you never did point me to that place where you tried to settle our differences "man to man".
