No no no no, that's not Exodous, thats the Ten Commandments.

I see a burning bush in Laura's creation.....................it could be an angel hovering, but best ask her, she will know better.

Yeah but you are too involved, too close.

I see a robed bearded man with arms aloft, silhouetted against a biblical sunset, with tablets of stone at his feet................so obviously.

I love Laura's paintings. She clearly loves painting, to paint such large canvases for such a little girl. I would have expected it to be much looser for one so young but there's definitely purpose and structure to her work

I dont mean to come across all art critic but that's the way I see it

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Laura's offerings this week are the material of nightmares but none the worse for that. The first is a portrait of her Aunt Amy...

The Locusts are Monet's Water Lillies, moments before they swarm..............

Aunt Amy's red hair is one of her striking attributes, it's definitely the right way up. Seen obliquely from the far right, to squash the perspective, it's quite like her.

I did click the google image list, I think Monet was a tad more deliberate. Besides, if he'd thought locusts like that were skulking by his pond he'd have moved indoors and painted bowls of fruit.

Less primitive you mean, yes that was his downfall...........just couldn't relax........like a four year old.

By the way.......locusts do not skulk

Both Felicity and Laura have tried several approaches to mixing. They sometimes use a palette for detail work and mix on that. They initially painted directly onto dry canvas, they're tending now toward putting a thin even wet coat of a premix (usually light) colour across the entire canvas and then painting onto the wet because they find it easier. When they're painting onto a wet canvas they quite often skip the palette mixing and pour paint directly where they want to work it in with the brush, mixing their shades into place. They usually have two brushes on the go, one in each hand, to control tones and textures. They've each learned from watching the other.

They're aware from experience that any mixed paints will quickly end up as shades of mucky brown if they let it. To stave that off they treat the canvas like a cat and either stroke the paint onto it or pat it; they never paint the same place twice with the same brush; and for some reason they never mix a red with a white. They haven't mentioned any other prejudices beyond those.

It's interesting . When I was working as a child care worker many many many many ....years ago I was struck by how two year olds would only paint in particular areas of the page. Psychologically i knew what they were doing but how do you change it. And that's when it became awsome. I had one child who didn't know what to paint one day so I suggested why not paint the whole paper blue.......holy crap I began something that even shocked me. Once that child had painted an entire page it was open slather. they could paint all over the place. Quite a few children looked a bit confused about painting a whole page a certain colour but once they had permission to do so ..(so to speak) they went hell for leather painting all over the place.

Something discovered by accident went a long way . Children don't know at the two to three year old age group that you CAN actually paint the entire piece of paper. I still have two paintings from my sons on the wall from that age group after learning this wonderful ideology of art.
