Oh how sometimes I'd love to dress again the way I did, 10 years ago.
I stopped as the 3rd person (stranger, same type of clothing) asked me how many time I tried to kill myself... wtf...
I never classed myself as nothing particular as far as wardrobe went but I guess many said it was a gothic/skater style. My doc M's, baggy black trousers, 99% bitch shirt, long leather coat (which i do still have but do not wear), spikes from wrist till elbows and around the neck and big black makeup. And of course black hair.. (which took ages to get rid of btw... had to grow that out)..
I realised it attracted drama, and it wouldn't land me a job. So that's why i now wear (for me) boring clothes.
Ever feel pressured to wear certain types of clothes to be accepted in social and/or work life? And what do you actually think about it ?
The cothes didn;t make me smarter or any dumber, but I would never have got this job in my old clothes. And in my job you do not see the customers so it doesn't matter...

My eldest son is 26 and dresses slightly as you've mentioned ...I believe he's pretty happy with himself . I don't think he's about to top himself too soon lol He's never been out of work just got his own place. etc etc....... I can't tell him that I dressed much the same 28 years ago because it wouldn't be cool anymore lol lol lol

ohh thats good to read!
i believe it was never really accepted here 5-10 years ago, as i live in the north with all the farmers (lol), i was one of few, but the only one at school that dressed differently.
maybe now it is more accepted, and maybe now they would give out jobs to "different" people.
but then.. phoe.. people used to cross the street when they saw me coming.. now im sure i wasn't that scary! lol

Chloe love ... you dared to be different and to find an identity in which you felt comfortable. I think that is such an awesome attitude! Personally I love the Goth look and in a story I am working on as we speak, the female lead is a young Goth who believes she is the Magdalene. She visits a churchyard/cemetery every day where she waits obviously vainly, for Jesus to come and take her away.

This is something which never ends as far as women are concerned. My mother died at 81, so never really got very old, but she would tell me about these old ladies who would pick apart other old ladies for the way they dress & sometimes she was the object of their scorn. What's fun about living today are people who actually mix prints with other prints, or stripes, or plaids! Not so long ago, to do such a challenging thing would make a woman a laughingstock & a person to be publicly picked apart. I learned very young NEVER to do that, & yet here it is, in high fashion!
Much too much is made of how a woman (or sometimes a man) dresses. I like to see individuality & comfort in clothes.

No purple or blue-hairs anymore, these old broads are very chic.

It's just such a shame like at my work: skirts and shorts may not be above the knee (prefere no shorts at all), no sandels or flipflops, no sleeveless tops, and no "funny" business printed on clothes. BUT as "short" or "weird" (i.e. goth etc) isn;t aloud, the "ladies"have taken to "low", bum crack skinny jeans, shirt so "low" their boobies hang out.
I have seen about every ladies bum crack and nippels at work by now.
Im sorry but that is just inappropriate. (funny how those people get a senior function after 2 years, and i have been there for 5 and believe me i do have more knowledge.. but thats a different topic).
Someone at work said, maybe you should dress more "lady like" , now i got real angry as this fat little **** dressed in trainers and unwashed shorts told me this ( i do not object to "larger' people as my boyfriend is classed as obese, and i love him just the way he is.
I'm sorry for being rude, but it did get to me as it seems that men do get "away" or paid less attention to then women are. If a woman wears jeans, sneakers and a shirt she's a fat slob, if men do it, no one even looks funny at them.. Sorry just a bit angry like i mentioned before, it makes me want to go in to work on monday in full goth glory, doc M's long leather coat, and full arm and neck spikes..

One of the things I remember from a work related trip to York some years back:
A lot of young women, mid-twenties to early thirties, I think, seemed to dress in the same clothes that probably made them look quite cute a decade before, when they were in school. sadly, most of them had added a pound or two, here and there, and I can only guess that they managed to maintain a self-image that was far more flattering to them than their actual appearance.
Though, the soldiers from the near-by armor base didn't seem to mind, at all.

reminds me of our aunty ( well its my mums friend, but she used to be round so much, we adopted her as an aunty).
If you are into that sort of clothing she had beautful clothes, and shoes as far as the eye can see (most stilettos as she cant wear flats anymore, hurts her legs)
But she insisted she was a size 10-12 when being a 14-16. She would suck and stuff herself into a skirt.. and when my brother had his wedding reception she had a break down, because of all that **** (rude word)
But if she had just bought the skirt one or 2 sizes bigger, she would have looked lovely.. but she chooses to go around in tight, button snapping clothes.. and they make her look bigger then she is to be honest.. sad.. very sad..
