33 Unwritten Rules Everyone Needs To Follow

Post by tabby »

No surprises here and most of these little rules are common sense & courtesy. Just the basics! Alas, we all have encounters with people on occasion who don't seem to have much self-awareness or concern for others and I recognize some of them in this article. I don't really perceive the article as a "How to" etiquette guide as much as a list of pet peeves.

Some observations:

Rule #1 - I usually do ride on the right side of an escalator but I've never had anyone pass me. Are you supposed to walk up or down them as they're moving? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of them being an escalator and not stairs?

Rule #10 - I'll try to keep that in mind!! Ha ha!

Rule #12 - This one made me laugh! Very enthusiastic reply! K.

Rule #15 - I see this a lot at the grocery store! Talk about lazy!

Rule #16 - Oh this really irks me!! Traffic can be difficult enough to deal with but invariably there's a few idiots who make a situation even more annoying. Just wait your turn!!

Rule #29 - This is frightening!

Are any of these unobserved rules pet peeves for you too?

K.

I'm not sure I understand "19. Hold the door when you walk in after someone." If you walked in AFTER someone, why hold the door?

Some of those are common sense, some are common courtesy.

Some don't make a lot of sense.

#1 - at the airport, lots of people are in a hurry, because they didn't plan well, or their incoming plane was late, and they try to make up time on the escalator, or moving walkway.

#9 - a particular pet peeve of mine. people are always in a hurry to get on the elevator, and there was once I even missed my floor because of idiots who had no sense of courtesy.

#2 - seems to be a forgotten rule. along with talking with your mouth full. Nobody really wants to see your half-chewed food.

I didn't even catch that and it's probably a typo!

I haven't seen too much of the mouth open chewing or talking with the mouth full, thank goodness but I've been seeing more people in public who don't know how to hold a fork properly. I realize the point is simply to get the food from Point A to Point B but the way they grasp the fork, lean over and shovel the food into their mouths is disconcerting. It won't serve them well in life and I don't know if they simply weren't taught any better, don't care or haven't eaten in weeks. It's usually young men in their teens and 20s that I see doing that.

I like to walk down an upward escalator. No reason... It just Irks the hell out of people. The best location Is Kings Cross Underground Tube Station. You can cause some serious Irking disruption there.

Well, like in the picture, the guy is going out the door, which opens outward. He has stopped to hold the door, so it does not swing back into the face of the person, behind him.

That person "should" grab the door, so he can let go, and get on his way. The other option is to move as quickly out of the doorway as possible, and thank him for his courtesy.

So ignore the written instructions and only pay attention to the photo? Seems a little confusing. *she nods yes as she says no*

Well, the written say walk in after someone, but the picture shows folks walking out.

Not sure the direction makes much difference, but you are right, it's all a bit confusing.

When clear, I always walk up or down escalators, never passed anybody. What is fun walking up the down or down the up. When available, stairs are fine by me.

In a hurry? Last time I was at the Denver Int'l Airport had a long layover and they have these really cool moving foot paths. Had a lot of fun on them. Seems most airports been to have them. Just usually don't have time for that.
