My town is on fire.. :-3

Post by Chloe_88 »

My town is on fire as we speak... :-3

about a 10 min cycle from my house (we're not in danger btw) but i used to live about 10 houses down from the places that are now on fire!

some say 5-7 shops + above flats are burnt to bits, even the birth house of mata hari is a gonner..

it's been going on from 5.22pm and now 10.03 pm it's still not under controle.. It's such a shame all those historic buildings.... :-3

Oh my god, that's huge! I wonder what started it. I hope everyone (and their pets) got out okay.

They have no idea yet if anybody (or pets) were in the building.

A simple question, if I may. Why is it that "anybody" is apparently restricted to one species? "Anybody" = any body, no?

No worries (for us). We are safe. Still it's not a big town, and impact is very big.. Bit scary i lived about 10 houses down couple years ago (top flat)..

** just came across this vid someone made from across the town:

Heard they're trying to get an extinguishing system/machine in from Amsterdam (like over 140 km from here..).. Wonder if it'll be here in time before the fire destroys even more...

In the OP photo, the fire is so brilliant that it makes the trees appear to be lit up for Christmas.

Don't worry Cloe you've got some pretty good firefighters over there ....you'll be right. Just a drawback of high density housing.

Well.. this morning the all clear was given, and they got the guy out, well dead body...

I cant imagine, whilst he was calling 911, burning to a crisp, starting to realise no one could/was coming for him.. What a nightmare..

My friend had just moved out of that area, and his "ex" house is one of the houses that has been "lost" .. Yuk....

Good on the restaurant owner across the street, 911 was called, he saw the fire, ran to the back (where the student flats are), and started screaming and banging on the doors to get them out of there. Because of his actions he most likely saved a life or 2..

Just to say, the fire flared up again last night, but that's dealt with now..

The 24 year old that died, was identified. His parents were on holiday in Turkey at the time.. The idea of burning alive.. brrrrr, gruesome..

The son of one of our old neighbours (from the village, 14 years ago) lived there aswell, his flat is gone.. But he is okay, thank god for that.

This is it now:

bloody hell!!!! I have a love hate relationship with fire. If it makes you feel any better he probably died of smoke inhalation first, or he would have been unconscious before the fire would have consumed him. I understand it's not much consolation but most people aren't conscious in these circumstances. Hopefully this was the case.

yeah.. i know.. but the thing is, they found his body in a cupboard, well what was left of it.. and eventhough he must of died of smoke inhalation, it must of been frickin hot where he was.. (he was like in the center of the fire. thats why they couldnt get him out..)

alive and dead cats have been found. the alive cats have gone to the shelter to be washed and taken care of.

It's really unsettling when anyone dies In a fire so close to you.

I wasn't living In Bristol when this happened but I often have reason to pass her memorial at the site, a mile from my home and you can't help but feel great sadness.

I was thinking it, you said it.. so true.. and how terrible for Fleur.

on good news; people everywhere started their own 058helps058 action (058 is our area code). they have received so many things (sofa's, beds clothes, stuff for pets etc) some even offered their spare rooms for the victims to stay in untill they're back on their feet, one lady said that they could refurnish the whole town! haha :) .. it's so wonderful to see how we yell at each other in the street, but when it comes down to it we're willing to help without asking anything in return :)

That's wonderful. It really restores your faith In human nature when people come together so quickly In a disaster.

A few years ago a fire In my village saw the family lose everything but thank god, all got out In one piece. The response was heart warming with donations of furnature, electrical goods, bedding, toys etc etc.
