'To' doesn't say 'tow' or 'toe' does it ? But the 'to' on the end of poatato and tomato does

are spelled 'potatoe' and 'tomatoe' in Australia.

I feel that this is very unlikely. Can any Australian linguists shed any light?"

We have a commercial on TV here where a man says "Old MacDonald was a bad speller" & the scene shifts to Old MacDonald at a spelling bee where he is asked how to spell 'cow' & he says: "Cow. C-O-W-E-I-E-I-O". I always have a laugh at that!

We have a linguist who has a regular spot on ABC radio during the week . I think I'll ring in this week. During spelling tests in primary school I used to very frustrated about it . I'm not making this **** up . And I know what you mean with the plural. That's the fustration one you add the E to make it plural the other carries the E. And therefore you just stick an S on the end. I don't go to YAHOO for my answers lol lol lol they were still calling a koala a bear until a few years ago . lol

I'm not sure about British english being Australian standard . Because you'd have to say that about Canada as well . Found out in high school that they put a lot of words together. We say "A lot" they say "alot" ...lots of little differences.

I love listening to Saturday morning radio when the kids ring in to ask questions of the VET. A couple of weeks ago a boy rang in to ask how to stop his dog from eating the crutches out of the families underwear. The time it took the Vet and the presenter to contain themselves was a classic radio moment.

Ooh, I ask a few older people (neighbours) how they were taught to spell 'Tomatoe' and 'Potatoe' when they were kids . Unlike myself they were taught to write those words as above where I was taught only one had an "e". Interesting.
