Read somewhere today about some scientists who dredged up a clam/mollusc off Iceland that they believe was like 500 years old. It was born in1499.
They judge the age by rings in the shell similar to the rings on a tree. Trouble is the only discovered this after the clam was dead.
Sigh.

I don't see where a 7 limbed freak of nature octopus is such a value it shouldn't be eaten just like the normal variety.

I wouldn't eat horse meat... unless there was a zombie apocalypse or something and I couldn't find anything else to eat. Same with dog. And I sure as hell wouldn't eat cat meat.
