Hunger in America ?

Post by Bruv »

In many ways, America is the land of plenty. But for 1 in 6 people in the United States, hunger is a reality.

Are things that bad ?

I've seen those numbers before, and they may be true. I know that we never run out of people to feed at the soup kitchens.

That percentage seems a bit high to me, but I agree that there are far too many people who are hungry or having to scrimp for the basic necessities.

yes,

many are hungry - no shortage here for people in lines at soup kitchens.

Lines for "free" food goes for blocks & one can be in line 2-3 hours before assisted.

People have fallen on hard times - some disabled - some ill and their in these lines - some are in garbage dumpsters eating right out of the dumpster.

It sickens me the food this country throws away & we don't feed our own.

Apparently we have a rise in Food Banks, not sure how they work or who refers people to them.

If people are unemployed here they shouldn't ever be hungry, if they cannot manage while working, there are benefits to top up wages.

That Number also includes those who cover well. Those who look like they are living okay on the outside but it's a very different story on the inside of the house. That's why it seems so high, it includes those keeping up appearances and may share only with family members their plight.

I've recently returned from a 3 week vacation in Hawaii. Wow right..!!

Every one thinks beautiful - tropical etc. . What a travel brochure won't reveal are the number of homeless living any where they can.

Taking a day trip ride around the island of Ohau the roads are cluttered with small tents and grocery carts. All eat directly out of a garbage can.

They're on a island and there's no where for the State to hide them - they've tried.

So, where many are shopping at Chanel - Louis Vitton - and leaving the Ritz Hotel, they're stepping over the homeless.

Hungry - yes - many beg.

Here on the main land - there are lines blocks & blocks long waiting for the free food to be distributed.

Shoplifters now are stealing food out of the grocery store - instead of the latest pair of jeans.

Last year for Christmas I went to my local grocery store - observed & picked out a particular family and purchased their groceries. I didn't wait around for a hug & tear.

Merry Christmas

I may do the same this C'Mas - for the hungry - it's a serious problem.

Isn't this what we used to hear about the USSR back in the 50's,60's,70's?

And that is part of the problem, so I understand.

The top end, high value, expensive ranges are not cutting back. The rich/poor gap is widening, and not world wide only, within countries too.

The Richest 300 persons on earth......

Thank you - it's always good to be home.

The wealthy drop off a Turkey once a year & fulfill their giving - appreciated yes of course. Fixing / helping with the problem of hunger / homeless no.

I've made friends sorta with a few of the homeless in Hawaii, I've heard their stories - I've bought some food.

Tony - a retired Military sleeps on the same picnic table & never leaves that picnic table.

it's his table & I expect to see him at that table -He is now in a wheel chair & living at that picnic table. it's sad.

YZGI

I don't know or remember the USSR 50's - 60's

I'm concerned with the hunger/ homeless in the USA

I'd have to say - there's no better place to be homeless than in Hawaii.

I don't know the answer to hunger/homeless and to bridge the gap between the wealthy & poor.

If there's something I can do to help I will.

Just in the county where I live, the local food bank gathers and redistributes something like 50,000 lbs of food a month. A lot of families depend on the food bank to feed their children. A lot of elderly also depend in programs like meals on wheels. And, Boulder county is one of the richest counties in the state.

While fast-food employees earn a median wage of $8.90 per hour, a little more than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, workers argue it’s simply not enough to live off of. Protesters are expected to walk out of various restaurants, including McDonald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Subway, Wendy’s, and KFC.

All international mega rich corporations, that could afford to raise their prices by a small percentage to cover a small increase.

Or even cut their profits slightly to increase wages. The thing is once employees realise the power they actually have and start taking action the hit to profits will be even bigger.

McDonald's recently added 64,000 people to its payroll in the United States, but job prospects in Europe for those so inclined to work in the fast food industry are looking pretty grim right about now. That's because the fast food giant is poised to add touchscreen kiosks in more than 7,000 of its restaurants in Europe in effort to replace actual, human cashiers

Work for a few technicians, less work for a lot of people, big outlay for McDonalds, bigger long term profits for McDonalds.

I believe McDonald's has a trial run with the touchscreen kiosk here in the US.

Similar with Airlines. Flying back from Hawaii - Hawaiian Airlines had 2 employees to ask for assistance with the touchscreen kiosks.

We do all the work

Weight the luggage - tag the luggage - print the boarding pass.

it's a little confusing.

everything is getting computerized - Banks - airlines - etc. - and now fast foods.

Will the kiosks stop people from eating at McDonald's - NO

and the price of that hamburger will probably go up

I think we'll all miss the personal touch.

It is the same with the super markets, self service tills everywhere now.

I work in my local Asda (Part of the Walmart family......yea right) They were encouraging the staff to use the self service tills by putting their receipts in a draw to win £10.

I got irate with several of the workers, telling them they were selling their fellow mate's jobs for a pittance.

There must be a place in the market for a super market that fills your bags and takes them out to your car............and chats about the weather too, like the old days.

those good old days are gone.

With all this self serv from gas stations to grocery stores - airlines etc.

and some wonder why there's so much unemployment - which leads to homeless and hungry.

It's a terrible cycle.

Us Airlines and American Airlines just merged thousands will now be unemployed.

I forgot about the self-serv grocery stores - I had to laugh - I went to a new store in our area - unloaded my cart of good onto the check out counter & the clerk just looked at me? I have to bag them - are you kidding?

I had to take a break - my back was killing me - I haven't been back..:yh_rotfl
