Another home fixture for the Vipers last weekend vs. a Rudgwick Raiders side that gave us a close game in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season, that one finished 2-2. This report is a little later than usual as I had to wait for a copy of the referees match report and also the results from the dubious goal panel (which only meets the first Wednesday of each month) all will be revealed later on.
So after a bit of banter between the Vipers supporters and the ‘Squatting’ Referee which included references to leaves on the line, no referee replacement service and bribes of any value accepted the match was ready to kick off.
So the team lined up with Oliver in goal, George and Theo in defence, Billy, Matty and Aden in midfield with George (new) up front, with the toss of the coin being won by Vipers the game kicked off with the home team attacking the village pond end.
Early possession fell to the Vipers, moving the ball around fluidly and creating chances however Raiders were organised well as a defensive unit. Successive corners by the Vipers came to nothing and two shots from Aden were saved comfortably by the keeper. Apart from one long range shot from Raiders which went wide of the target the first 5 minutes was all one way traffic.
Raiders then got their first corner of the match after a useful counter attack blocked comfortably by Theo and the corner was cleared by Billy at the near post. Another corner from the Vipers created a good chance which fell to Aden who’s shot hit the outside of the post, the first goal is surely going to come soon. A good cross from George (new) was met on the volley by Aden but saved by the keeper, Billy then had a long shot at goal which went high and wide of the mark.
Raiders now pushing up from defence to try and reduce the space Vipers were finding in midfield backfired on them as a long pass over the flat back two of Raiders was latched onto by George (new) who rounded the keeper with great composure a slotted the ball into a open net, 1-0 Vipers. A couple more opportunities for the Vipers just before the break including the last move of the half which involved passing move from defence right through to midfield resulting in George (new) playing a one-two off a Raiders defender but shooting just wide. Half Time whistle blows 1-0 to the Vipers.
No substitutions made at half time and so the second half was kicked off by the Raiders, with their turn to attack the Pond end.
Again the Vipers started well with the first chance falling to them, Matty combining well with Aden who crossed the ball for George (new) to head, just wide of the mark, good move Vipers.
Then an excellently struck shot from Aden destined to hit the back of the net was saved by the keeper, hit the post and went out for a corner. A good corner from Aden was met by Billy who shot just wide and Vipers carried on with lots of possession and Raiders still only feeding of scraps of time on the ball getting their first and second corners of the half in quick succession but no chances created.
Vipers got their second goal of the match soon after with a long ball, again from Billy, picked up by Matty on the left side of midfield who crossed the ball across the face of the goal for George (new) to slide the ball home, 2-0 Vipers. The Raiders keeper who had been suffering for a while after his save from Aden’s strike a few minutes early was replaced by a new keeper, so after the Vipers had smashed Raiders in the possession stakes it was now time to grab the victory!
The ball was collected by George (new) in midfield, this time with him on the left hand side, passed the back to Matty who’s first time shot towards goal crept in at the near post through a defender and the goal keeper (confirmed by the Referees Match Report and video evidence presented to the dubious goal panel), 3-0 Vipers. 3 soon became 4 when the Raiders pulled Billy down just outside the area, Billy dusting himself off to take the free kick which was expertly powered just over the jumping wall into the top of the net, 4-0 Vipers.
Almost immediately Matty then wrestled possession off of Raiders and passed to Aden who shot low and hard into the far corner of the net, great goal 5-0 Vipers. Raiders now down and almost out did then muster an attack but Theo was still fully focused and blocked a shot to give Raiders another corner. The game was getting stretched with the ball going from end to end but no real chances created. Sensing the team was tiring Keith made a couple of changes, Oliver (S) coming on for George (new) and Zak coming on for Theo.
Raiders had more of the ball in the last 5 minutes but Oliver (B) saved well from one good chance for the Raiders and George covered well marshalling the new defensive line to keep the Raider at bay. Raiders did finally get their reward for some hard working football albeit with the help of two Vipers midfield players telling the referee that the ball had gone out of play (play to the Whistle Boys!) and so the Raiders took their chance and made the score 5-1, soon after the final whistle blows for the end of the game.
So a great win for Storrington Vipers with a good solid performance all round. Another good half time talk from the coaching staff, with the plan put into a_ction by the players creating the 2nd and 3rd goal for Vipers. Well done everybody
So onto the second match which was going to be a shorter game due to the number of player’s Raiders had available. Henry going between the sticks, Vinny and Zak in defence, Thomas, Mahir and Finlay in midfield and Sam up front was the line up and the second match was underway.
Vipers started well with the early possession however no clear cut chances were created, Raiders with their first break away shooting just wide, and then Vinny cleared from another Raiders attack with Sam picking up the ball on the right wing with a strong run and shot which was saved by the keeper.
Henry was the busier of the keepers saving brilliantly from a free kick from the Raiders and from another free kick rebounding in the area for Henry to pounce on. Zak then defended well, first blocking a shot and then header behind for a Raiders corner. Half time whistle blows with the score line 0-0.
More changes at half time, this time Henry and Finlay swapping positions, Finlay going in goal, Oliver (S) come on for Mahir in midfield and Jamie coming on for Zak in defence.
The second half saw Raiders starting the stronger with lots of possession and throw ins putting lots of pressure on the Vipers defence but Finlay was in good form and saved from a Raiders corner. Vipers broke up field quickly with a good run from Thomas and great pass with Henry about to pull the trigger when a bobble of the ball made Henry strike wide of the target, unlucky Vipers good move.
Two more good saves from Finlay kept the score line 0-0 but still Raiders kept on attacking with consecutive corners, the second giving Raiders the lead with the corner kick going straight in 1-0 Raiders.
Just time for Vinny and some no nonsense strong defending which broke up field for Henry to shoot from distance only to hit the post, what a strike though! Then good defensive
play from Oliver and the last corner from Raiders came to nothing and the final whistle blew 0-1 to Raiders.
Once again lots of positives to take out of the game despite this defeat, playing against a strong Raiders team all our players tried their hearts out so well done to you all; with a bit more luck you could have won this game.
Next weekend’s game is against Dorkinians, another foe from seasons past. Until then happy Christmas shopping!
