Has the aroma always made you gag? Or did you like strawberries at some point in your life?

I used to like liver until I was pregnant with my son and, since then, I haven't been able to go near it.

I have this odd memory in my head of my mother trying to get me to eat strawberries when I was very young. Like sitting in a high chair young. I know that the texture of most berries bothers me terribly. the tiny seeds just irritate, and I don't like that textural stimulus.

I often accused Mom of force-feeding me strawberries back then.

She, denied it, of course. She loved the things, and simply could not understand how someone could not.

But forever, the aroma has been enough to trigger my gag reflex.

I think I might starve if all there was to eat was a lot of strawberries.

Love semolina. Love the skin of the custard. They used to push it to one side at school and save it for me. "The rubber glove" my mate called it

Cant stand tapioca though Oh no... not skin on custard.... Vile.... My Mothers had many uses... we could use them as bathing hats for example.

Love tapioca...

What a fun thread to read!

I like to try new foods, but i also have a lot of demands!

- ricepudding, the smell makes me vomite. (and anything else that looks / smells like it!)

- If i'd eat something like chili con carne with rice, the rice and sauce have to be separated.. preferably separate plates! I can never have rice mixed in with the sauce!

- Fat, skin or bones on/in meat, no way..

- Anything from the sea (except salmon and tuna)

- Friese droge worst (I don't know what i can compare it to but it is like a dried smoked sausage). Smells ok, but yuk.. taste is nasty..

And there are most likey some other things that I don't like.. but i think this is quite enough for now! :wah:

I thought this was an interesting article about what disgusts people of different cultures.

You Eat That?

Disgust is one of our most basic emotions—the only one that we have to learn—and nothing triggers it more reliably than the strange food of others

WSJ

snip-

Take cheese, considered by Westerners to be anything from a comfort food to a luxurious delicacy. A good taleggio, Gorgonzola or Brie might be described as sweaty or slimy. Cheese also has its fair share of aromatic obstacles and, depending on the circumstances, may be confused with vomit, stinky feet or a garbage spill. Many Asians regard all cheese, from processed American slices to Stilton, as utterly disgusting—the equivalent of cow excrement.

Given that cheese can be described as the rotted bodily fluid of an ungulate, that's not far off. But controlled rot tastes good in this case—at least to us (or most of us). The key is to manage the decomposition in such a way as to get that desired flavor and to ensure that we don't get sick from consuming the food (in some cases, rot is actually necessary because the fresh version is poisonous).

Some cultures consider cheese repulsive. Worth considering: The bacteria that cause foot odor are also found in many cheeses. Nikolai

Thats very true. I think Eskimos are particularly sensitive to the smell of dairy products on us. Hardly surprising, given the scarcity of Cattle in the region. Then there's the rancid shark meat that Scandinavians adore......

The Brie I had at christmas had an extremely acrid ammonia smell after a few days. Too much even for me

I loathe sea food like crab, lobster, prawns etc. Fish I enjoy, except that disgusting smoked salmon (I think I would throw up if I had to eat raw fish !), but I do enjoy properly cooked salmon. Garlic, GARLIC !!!! I hate it with a passion ! I glanced through a recipe booklet the other day - it was meant for people who wanted to loose some weight. EVERY dish in this booklet had garlic as an ingredient FFS !!!! except the sweets ! (and that surprised me actually !!! ). OK I appreciate that one could exclude garlic from a recipe, but why is there this flamin' fetish to have garlic with everything these days ???? I don't like mushrooms and as a child the smell of them cooking used to make me want to gag ! Mind you, having said that, as a child I used to loathe grilled tomatoes. As an adult I absolutely love them !!! I love cheese except Stilton and gorgonwhatsits and similar stinky cheese ............ yuk ! I like parmesan cheese on my pizzas, the smell is awful and I call it 'sicky cheese' :wah: but it tastes good on the pizza ! ;)

Anything that lives in water, salt or fresh. My parents used to eat 'tomato herring' & I found the smell so repulsive I'd run out gagging & not come home for hours. Probably why they ate it; alone time.

There are several foods I have never allowed into my mouth so I don't actually know whether I dislike them or not. I've never experienced squids, octopussies, mussels, winkles, scallops or oysters, nor their land equivalent of slugs and snails. Neither shrimps, lobsters nor woodlice have graced my table. I don't think I've been unreasonable in excluding these delicacies from my diet.

I had a bagel once in Vancouver, I wasn't impressed.
