Going to work with colds and coughs

Post by Oscar Namechange »

I seem to remember a time when If your child had a bad cold or cough, you kept them off school. Likewise, If you had a really bad cold or cough, you stayed off work.

I appreciate and understand that not all people can do that these days however,

I get a call today to say my regular taxi drivers car Is off the road and they are sending me a replacement for the school run to the other side of Bath. A journey, depending on traffic that takes 3 hours.

Once In the car and well on our way, I realsie the replacement has a serious bad cough and bad cold. Too late, I am captive In the car.

Frankly, I am put out. Not just for myself but my life Is spent these days avoiding any situation like this because just one Infection will see my husband back In hospital with serious breathing difficulties. Even friends do not call If they have the slightest suspicion of a cough or cold out of consideration...Not to mention, the risk to my charge I am escorting from his special needs school. If he goes down with anything, his parents lose work staying home to care for him and their entire routine Is disrupted.

Throughout the 3 hour journey this replacement driver snorted up his phelm and spat It out of the window as we were going along.. something I found deeply offensive. Eventually, It became so gross I told him to pack It In. He said he couldn't help It.

It's probably way too because I have probably already Infected my husband by now but I have refused to travel with him tomorrow.

People can be so inconsiderate can't they. When my mum was alive, if I got a cold etc. I would just talk to her on the phone rather than call round to her house. She only lived about 5 miles away on the outskirts of the city, in a village. She understood and thanked me for being thoughtful.

At the moment I am just getting rid (I hope) of the remnants of a very nasty and virulent bug that was given to me and my hubby at our 50th wedding anniversary 'do' last October, by somebody we had not seen for nearly 3 years ! I was informed over the phone, by her, that she had this dreadful 'cold' but as she was in the area for once, she simply wanted to see us after such a long time. I tried to tell her that she could call in after she had got rid of her 'bugs' but she was insistant :( . Hey ho ! Both Chris and I got this bloody bug ! Chris managed to throw his bugs off at the end of December, then promptly caught a cold from somebody during one of his shopping trips ! With me, I had to have two courses of anti-biotics (fortunately the bug was not viral so the anti-biotics were able to hit it where it hurts !), before the bugs showed signs of buggering off ! I still have a little rubbish in the lungs but that is finally reducing considerably.

This is precisely why infected people should THINK before going to see friends/relatives. These nasty bugs may be thrown off easily by them but the poor people they pass them on to could suffer quite a few problems because of their thoughtlessness. They seem to think that people will be mortally offended if they don't get a visit from a sniffing, coughing friend ! :-5

Well, I hope you shake It off Gill... That's worrying.

As I said before, our friends and relatives who are aware that Peter now has just one lung and the other full of holes, don't come If they have any suspicion of the slightest sniffle and I've got to the point where I will stop anyone from coming In my house If they have a cold or cough.

Even If I go down with It and It's really bad, I then lose pay because of him.

So now, I'll spend a week without kissing my husband just to be sure

Going to work with colds and coughs

Post by Snooz »

I stayed home from work today with (I think) bronchitis. I don't know if I'm still contagious since I've been sick for three days but for my own comfort and the health of my cubicle mates, I figured I'd rather be home hacking up a lung than sharing it with my co-workers. That's one of my biggest pet peeves, people that think they're being heroic coming into work sick as a dog.

It's tough going any place now a days without people sneezing or coughing all over the place. How about the parent that brings the snotty-runny nose child to the store who is wiping his nose with his/her hand and then touching everything! Ewwwwwww!!

I always grab a bunch of sanitized hand wipes as soon as I walk in the store and wipe down the cart.

I love the hand wipes they have in the stores nowadays to wipe down the cart handles! I've always said that the reason illnesses get so bad some years is because people won't stay at home when they are sick!

Ohh Snooz, I hope you feel better soon!

One of the girls in our team at work, felt bad about phoning in sick so she came to work anyway. I was finally having one of my better weeks, till she came in...

The next day she phoned in sick anyway. The day after I had to phone in sick.. As the next and the next in our team.

It was one of the most terrible case of the flu I can remember having for a long time! I was sweating buckets, fever, and a hacking cough. Which didn't help my stomach problems, because coughing so much and so hard put strain on my stomach area!

As the rest of the team, we wished she had just stayed home !

I think that out and about, It's fair to assume some people have to go out to shops etc so now we do carry hand sanitizer In the car with us.

Yet, to know that you have a stinking cold and cough and know your passengers are going to be captive In your car for 3 hours Including a vulnerable child Is bang out of order.

Worse, to then, repeatedly scrape up the phelm from the back of your throat and spit It out of the window In front of your passengers Is just downright filthy.

Hey bronchitis is not to be ignored or made mild of.

Go see your PC and get some drugs!!

Try a Vick's inhaler...get plenty of rest and drink lots of juice!

Problem with the wipes is they are usually anti-bacterial and not

anti-viral.

Another problem with a lot of these bugs is that you can be

contagious for a couple of days BEFORE you have any symptoms.

We went to a holiday party on the 22nd of Dec. and husband

got something starting the next day, even though nobody at

the party was 'sick'.

I used to have to go to work a lot of times because the place

was very short staffed, with nobody to cover for me.

I usually try to avoid kids if I can, they're germ factories!

You got that right, those little bastards are walking petri dishes.

I was kind of excited to find out that the cough syrup the doctor prescribed had codeine in it but I didn't notice any difference. So I guess my retirement plan of becoming a patron of an opium den is out of the question.

Oscar, I went on a rare rant last year about this topic and I still feel the same way! Here's the link so I won't repeat myself! ~~~~~> http://www.forumgarden.com/forums/healt ... -days.html

I hope you didn't get sick from the exposure!

And Snoozie, I hope you're feeling better.

Tabby, I read your OP on the thread you mentioned.

I did lie a bit, i think (?).. I stay home when it's something others can catch.

But last year when my body was (and still is) breaking down, I was working from break till break time. Hoping to get through the day. Sometimes I would have to regroup my thoughts in the ladies loo whilst clinging on to the washbasin, hoping I would not collaps. I think that must have gone on for at least 6 months - 1 year.. untill I gave up and went on the (parttime)sick.

But then I can't infect others with my vitamin b12 deficiency or with my acid reflux :wah:

So just to set things straight, if it's someting infectious, then I stay home!

I did in december when I had B12 injections twice a week. Since then (19th of december) the GP will only give me 1 injection a month. Everything is back where I frickin' started.

I thought I was having a bloody heartattack today! (acid reflux.. jippy.. :( )

Sorry.. I went to hospital today to see a gastroenterologist.. and i'm just frickin' pissed off right now..

:wah: shouting.. that feels a bit better! :)

Thanks for asking Tabby

And Snoozie, I hope you're feeling better. That was Interesting reading Tabby... seems I am not alone.

Now by contrast, I get a call today to see If I can do an extra school run. The regular escort felt she was about to go down with flu and has decided to take a week off rather than risk Infecting the children. That's commendable but my replacement driver last week knew he was going to a special needs school with vulnerable children and didn't give a s.hit. I hope he goes down with a chronic case of galloping knob rot.
