First time I heard about this, one of the grandkids apparently was bragging to his sister about getting into this.
Sister is a bit out there, be she this was out beyond anything she was interested in.
Hooked: Why would Boulder County folks want to hang from hooks piercing their skin? - Longmont Times-Call
The concept is not really new. several of the plains indians used to hold Sun Dances now and again, and they incorporated such things. (Perhaps you saw "A Man Called Horse")
It seems to be popular among a lot of young folks across the world, now.

I think that like Tattoos, I have made it this far without, so I will probably pass.

I never figured out why people get tattoos. It will take me even longer to figure this one out.

I remember seeing 'A Man Called Horse' - I think the film came out in the 70's. In fact I have the film on tape, which I recorded from the TV ! When I watched the film back then I can remember wincing when they hooked Horse through his chest and suspended him for some considerable time. If I remember rightly it was an initiation ceremony performed by American Indians on men to prove they were mature and wanted to be a member of that tribe. Richard Harris played the aristocrat Lord John Morgan who was captured and enslaved by the Sioux, and became a Sioux after he went through the hook ceremony.
I cannot understand people wanting to have hooks through their skin and be suspended well off the ground. It must be very painful surely !!! I think they must be a trifle mad !

I find any personal bodily mutilation in the name of vanity bizarre & repulsive. Most of the time it's to fall in line with the current 'fashion of the day', only to end up scarred for life.
Only last week I saw a young lad walking through town with stretched ear lobes, with holes punched through them about the size of a penny, or the inner spindle of a stack of blanks CDs for those using a different currency - in fact a spindle could easily have fitted in them like an ear ring. It was GROSS, and it just has to be asked why anyone would do / have someone do something like that to themselves. Can you imagine it when he gets to have kids of his own, 20 years or so later... "Daddy, tell me about the horrible accident you got into. Did someone shoot you through the ears?" They might as well have had - he obviously had nothing between them.
It's unbelievable what people will do to themselves when they're told that something is the latest 'fad', and that it's 'cool' to do it.

I've already written on the revolting neighbour with the rotten teeth yet can find money to have her entire arm from wrist to shoulder tattoo'd with Halloween things like pumpkins. Yeah I know !!! Then weekly the hair goes from green to blue to pink. Fine. But she also had body piercings and sorry, but I find this revolting especially In women. Yeah, I know, her choice and all that but she has studs In her eyebrows and lips. Not just one as a fashion statement but frankly, you could hang your car keys from them. This Is along with not one but 4 tongue piercings that makes her speak like Rainman.
My husband had to go round last week to see her husband and found she'd had also added some nose piercings. He reliably Informed me that at first he thought she had a green bogey hanging from the nose... all I can ask Is why?
Having said that, I know other people who just have one piercing, like a jewel and It looks rather nice I think.
I have one tattoo pertaining to the liptabulous Mick Jagger that I can cover up when needed.

I got my ear pierced the first time I crossed the equator. (the crew insisted it was a Sailor's tradition going back to the days of the Magellan. The ceremony involved a lot of Rum, as well.)
That has been the limit of my self-mutilation.
Don't really get the point of such stuff.
There was a time when I was interested in trying the Sun Dance thing, but I came to my senses when the alcohol wore off.
