48 hr Protection ??

A certain antiperspirant manufacturer proudly advertises its product as having 48 hour protection.

Why would anyone consider it acceptable to keep the stuff on and not wash for 48 hours ?

It works if you dust yourself with Talc too................but then my Mum found out about that trick........when I was seven.

I remember some years ago they had tv commercials about the whole 48 hours protection thing and it showed times like someone is suddenly rushed to the hospital and your waiting around in the waiting room for days or delayed flights at the airport and you're camped out waiting, that sort of thing.

I recently wore the same clothes for three days and didn't wash in all that time. Admittedly I was wild camping but the stuff seems to work more or less. Can't say i go around sniffing my armpits as a regular thing.

Just to elaborate my previous reply:

When we moved to the Netherlands, it was normal to wear the same clothes for days and only to wash once a week.

I think we were the only ones who showered every day and had a clean set of clothes every day...

Admittedly in recent times a lot of dutch people seem to have caught on to the idea of what a shower is....

It's not so bad if everyone smells as bad as you. I went for long periods back when I was a soldier and only noticed when I ventured into civilisation and into a shop or when I got home and had to take all my clothes off before I was allowed in the house

I admit I had to laugh at the last part about not being allowed in the house.

But understandable that you can't shower all the time when you are a soldier..

I was in Germany in '78. Lived in a tent for nigh on 4 weeks with only a cold water bowser to wash in. Needless to say we were grubby, smelly gits and I often dry shaved while still in my sleeping bag because the water was so cold. We did get one shower. The German army took us to a local barracks to use their facilities

Okay! Then I understand you weren't allowed in the house before stripping down!

I can only say I hope not to see the day when/if I have to do something like that. I need a good shower every day with my strong armpit and foot BO..

It took me years to find a deodorant that works (Roll on Odorex), I used to wear a shirt one day and had to thow it out.

No, I don't have some kind of smelly pit syndrome, I just sweat a lot! For the first time in years I can wear shirts of colour.. I used to only wear black or white shirts, because I would sweat so much (in seconds), the sweat marks would be down to my hips!

Well, you remember the animated, stretched facial hair when the "dual blade" safety razor was born, right? They then went on to the "triple" and the "quad" blade razor using the same animated motivation for their product. Often when I sign on to my Yahoo account I'm accosted by an advert that states, "Be the first to try the new "Five blade razor!" Does any man really think that whatever number of blades we use will eliminate the necessity for more than one stroke, or that a single hair can stretch to an indefinite length?

Why doesn't the leading blade go blunt the same as a single blade razor ?

I've always avoided multi-bladed razors as the gap between them fills up with gunk almost immediately, making them useless.

I'm not certain that I understand the question, nor do I even agree that it is true. In any case, I'm sure you've heard the common saying,

"A multi-bladed safety razor is only as good as the dullest blade."

But for the moment let's say that you're right. I wear a "Van Dyke" beard, which means I have more edges to consider than those who only need to contend with the two edges of their side-burns. Judging the ACTUAL cutting edge of a blade is important if you want an even cut. A multi-bladed razor (and even a wide-based single-bladed razor) are difficult to negotiate, and if the edge of your blade is a hit or miss affair then it's like shortening one leg on a four-legged table. Know what I mean? A straight razor is ideal, and a single-blade safety razor is the next best thing to it.

I use the two blade gillette g2. The old, cheap single blade bic razors are torture. You can feel every individual hair being plucked from your chin.

The old type safety razors, where you insert the blade, are even worse but that's because of my porcelain smooth complexion

I think I have sung the praises of the cheap Bic on here and what a ridiculous price the multi blades are in comparison.

Every now and then I get given a gift of of these super dooper multi bladed master pieces and I use them until the blades are finished, then are never sure what ones to buy when replacing them, the selection is too big, so rather than spend too much on wrong blades revert to Bic.

I have been using the same super system, the name escapes me right now, for over a year.......and I have replaced the blades and I am really impressed.

I still can't work out why multiple blades are better though, the first blade gets all the wear........it just doesn't make any sense.

I never use 'smellies', whats the matter with soap and water?

Brut! How that brings back memories! I was always fond of Tabac and used to think of it as "my scent". I had a look round for it at the Duty Free facilities this past week ....... NOTHING! Is it no longer produced?

I always use the Bic Orange (for sensitive skin) razors. Apart from the unbranded ones, which are very hit & miss, and not to be relied on, they're about the cheapest ones going, and in my opinion, the best.

As for After Shave, I use it so very rarely that I still have the same bottle that I've had for years. I remember I was given a bottle of "Champ" by my Grandmother for my 13th birthday, but even by then I had a full beard, so After Shave was never really relevant - so I used it to fuel my Steam Engine when I ran out of meths.

Rather than travel with a cumbersome container of shake-it-first shaving lather, I take along a tube of shaving "soap" (like the ones toothpaste comes in) as well as a shaving brush, to give me an aire of machismo just like grand-dad. But I've never owned a throat cutter - is that what it's really called? I thought it was called a straight razor. Anyway, I'd like to give it a go. It has to be better than a safely razor for getting a proper shave with a meticulous appearance.

It is a cut-throat razor...... a subtle difference, it says it is possible to cut a throat, not that it is a tool for cutting throats...............if you get my drift.

I can't say I've ever used a cut-throat, myself, but I can't imagine that the blade could be anywhere near as sharp. Despite the bravado of the stropping & honing on the leather strap, it simply lacks the fine precision of a disposable blade.

I don't see why not. I can sharpen a pocket knife edge equal to that of a safety razor so I suppose that I can do the same with a straight razor.

Oh, that cannot be true. A safety razor is at a grave disadvantage by its mere construction. It's a blade in a frame and you cannot even see the edge of the blade because of it. In other words, you're guessing where the initial cut will be made once you put the thing to your face.
