FB a step too far?

Post by Bruv »

A Florida mother is outraged after her 4-year-old son was expelled from his preschool because of a Facebook post on her personal page.

How does this hang with the idea of free speech in the land of the free ?

:-3 wow, at her stupidity, fancy tagging the school in the post!

She says she tagged the school in the post but didn’t expect to receive a call to the office the next day.

Therefore, surely the post did not remain just for her friends to see?

“Why would you expel a 4-year-old over something his mom posts on her private Facebook page only people on her friends list can see?

Because she tagged the school I assume. I expect they saw that and were very upset.

Just shows how venting all your emotions on social media isn't really a good idea. I hope she's learnt her lesson and will never do it again!

"Tagged" I shall have to learn what that means and the consequences of using it, I don't think I know how to do it, thank goodness.

When you type within many areas on facebook if you start typing a name it will often throw up choices of people on your friends list, sort of like how a phone throws predictive text at you and once you accept such a name within your text they are basically tagged. Certainly on a laptop you know you are doing it. I don't use FB much on my mobile but I'm pretty sure you must know it is happening.

Upside of a private school: They can pretty much do what they want without state intervention.

Downside of a private school: They can pretty much do what they want without state intervention.

Is there no authority for such disputes ?

Wouldn't a word in her shell like and a request to take down the offending words be in every ones best interest ?

Where US law stands on the issue.

Whether a contract was previously signed that covers such actions.

Preschool would not class as National Compulsory Education.

Once again, Religions rears its ugly head & (if similar to the UK) exempts itself from other laws.

Where does the legal status stand on Social Media postings, as they are not securely validated. Clone postings are commonplace.

Basically, though, the Parents are the customers. They are the ones that pay the school's way. If I was being treated that way to start with I would have been more inclined to remove my child from the school rather than waiting for the child to be expelled.

It also raises the issue as to whether we are seeing the full story here or not.

It's a private school, and they have a right to refuse service to people who would bad-mouth them in public.

Besides, her post indicated that she is not happy having her son in their school for a number of reasons. They fixed that.

And I doubt that it was the child that the school was punishing.

Succinctly, that's it. As to whether the boy understands that his mother has a big mouth and a bad attitude, I suspect he does since he has to live with her.

Around here, private Christian schools are autonomous from the State PED. Although their students must still take and pass the state test to be awarded a diploma.

As there was. She signed a copy of the handbook which is a legally binding contract.

Preschool would not class as National Compulsory Education.

Also correct. State mandated education begins in Kindergarten in America.

Once again, Religions rears its ugly head & (if similar to the UK) exempts itself from other laws.

True, the school answers to the Church with which it is affiliated. That Church probably sent the expulsion order.

Facebook is notorious for not making privacy easy for its users. That's why I so rarely post there and NEVER friend any of my students or ex-students.

Religion has nothing to do with this. It wouldn't be any different if I were fired for bad mouthing my employer on FB.

That doesn't seem to be the issue here. Even if she denied that posting the school is only bounded by their contract and may still remove the kid.

That woman seems to be a thick in the head.

Must be a slow news day that they even bothered with it.
What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?
She had the black vote all locked up.
