I am on a real high at the moment. Seriously, I am in tears because of it. It may not seem much, but it's a real boost to me.

I think I may have mentioned recently that I had been writing a few arrangements during the choir's Summer Break (back on Thursday). Well, I just got an eMail from SheetMusicPlus.com. Now, I was half expecting an eMail from them to tell me that my arrangements had been approved for publishing. Not this time. This email was to notify me that I had just sold another one. My latest piece at that - An SATB version of "The Lost Chord" (originally written by A.S.Sullivan as a Solo piece.

Incidentally, I get a massive $1.80 in Royalties added to my account.

I wonder if I should declare that to the DWP.

If it helps, I'll listen two or more times, I did like it, then there is the but,

Had a hard time listening to the lyrics, like in the 60's hard rock.

Anyway, look forward to your future works.

I know some people have problems understanding the robotic sounds of the Virtual Singer (which is constantly improving with each update), but if you know them, or have the words to hand it comes across a lot clearer.

Seated one day at the organ, I was weary and ill at ease,

And my fingers wandered idly over the noisy keys.

I know not what I was playing, or what I was dreaming then;

But I struck one chord of music, like the sound of a great Amen.

It flooded the crimson twilight, like the close of an angel's psalm,

And it lay on my fevered spirit with a touch of infinite calm.

It quieted pain and sorrow, like love overcoming strife;

It seemed the harmonious echo from our discordant life.

It linked all perplexed meanings into one perfect peace,

And trembled away into silence, as if it were loathe to cease.

I have sought, but I seek it vainly, that one lost chord divine,

Which came from the soul of the organ, and entered into mine.

It may be that death's bright angel will speak in that chord again,

It may be that only in Heav'n I shall hear that grand Amen.
Note that this is only an arrangement, not an original composition.

How's about this then ... Another eMail from SheetMusicPlus.com - This time 6 copies of "Gaudete" (which is only a single sheet of music).

Total Royalties for this piece - $6.21.

With all the other pieces I'm nearly half way towards getting a cheque.

Very cool, auto-tuned hymns... now why didn't I think of that? Honestly, I liked it. It was surreal.

I use Harmony Assistant (Myriad: Music Notation Software and much more... / Myriad : logiciels de musique, et bien plus...) to score all my music with. It has a built in "Virtual Singer", which is a Voice Synthesiser which speaks the works to the pitch of the note, thus effectively singing. I use it mainly as a tool for making Training Files for the choir, but it's a lovely program overall (which, incidentally, you'll find my name on the credits of - although I don't get anything for it).

Being a talent musician...vocalist....it doesn't matter about the money. It's about being acknowledged and respect.

Tell that to Andrew Lloyd Webber .

Yes, if it were the money then there wouldn't be any point to it. I've got loads of pieces that I've not published. For that matter I wouldn't be able to publish them without paying a fortune in Copyright to the original composers - such as Meatloaf's I Would Do Anything For Love", which took me over 2 years to arrange, with the hope that the choir could do it (but they turned it down on the grounds that it was too "samey" throughout). I got a price for a licence to print 50 copies for the choir use - £80. If it were to be public publication it would be much more. This is why when I write arrangements I try to make them Public Domain pieces where possible.

To be honest, I was really surprised that Gaudete sold at all - let alone 6 copies. That is one we'll be doing with the choir this Christmas. Being the Copyright holder myself, there shouldn't be any problems with putting a video of us doing that one on the website.

I've just noticed that on the SheetMusicPlus.com website they'd put Gaudete on Sale, knocked down from $2.50 to $2.30, but put a minimum order of 6 copies on it, which would explain how I sold 6.

Suits me fine.

Breaking News.

I've just got another eMail from SheetMusicPlus.com. Another copy of "The Lost Chord" has sold, bringing my Royalties total up to $11.59. That means I'm past the half way mark now before I get my first Royalties Cheque (which I intend to scan & save in a safe place).

Watch out Elton John. You've got competition!!

It seems funny, though, that it's a couple of years since I sold my first one ("Salvation"), and now 8 copies of 2 new pieces in just a couple of weeks.

Oh, happy day. I just got home after a very long day (early shift at work - 08:00 - 16:00, meaning I had to leave at 07:15), then on to Ebe's, then on to choir, so only just got home (22:30).

As usual I fired up the machine to check my eMails & found another message from SheetMusicPlus.com telling me that I've just sold another 10 copies of Gaudete, plus 1 copy of The Lost Chord - a total of $ 12.15 in Royalties, making a running balance of $ 23.74, which is now within payment levels (having reached the required $20), to be paid at the end of the month.
