Years ago, when I was not long married (yes I can remember that far back ! :p ), I had called at my mum's house and stayed most of the evening, well till well after midnight in fact :wah: Well you know what it's like when two women get chatting ! :wah: As I was going to leave and come home I walked to the double gates to my mum and dad's back yard, to open them to drive out when I noticed lights flashing in the grocery store opposite my dad's shop. My mum and dad's house was attached to the rear of their shop.
I stood for a moment to watch the flickering light in the grocer's store and realised that there was somebody inside with a torch. Now being very quick on the uptake, I also realised that, as the store had been long closed, somebody was being rather naughty and probably doing a bit of nicking !
I nipped back into the house, quickly told my parents what I'd seen and immediately phoned the police. To their credit the police were there very quickly and surrounded the store as best they could. I believe they had contacted a key-holder because I saw the manager arrive about 5 minutes later and he unlocked the door for the police to get into the store. I counted at least 6 police officers who had arrived in 3 patrol cars. After a few minutes 2 police officers came out of the front door of the store escorting a handcuffed young man to one of the patrol cars. There was another officer following them carrying a bag which looked as if it had items in it. I half expected to see the word 'SWAG' daubed on the side of the bag ! :wah: As they passed by I mentioned to the young man that he was a bit daft doing what he did without first checking his calendar - it was April 1st ! (April Fool's Day). He gave me a resigned look and rolled his eyes !
Has anybody else been instrumental in calling police to a suspicious activity ? Would you like to share your story ?

I got arrested & taken in for questioning once, when I was living in digs, after an anonymous tip off had told Police I was running a bomb factory in my room.
Needless to say there was nothing to it & the Police were convinced it was probably a hoaxing prankster.
Mind you, I got a ride to the Police Station in a car, but had to walk home.

Given that I never carry a gun and the other party was armed I don't see that I could end up with the grief that George Zimmerman brought upon himself.

My comment was more directed at the draw of the luck he ended up targeted by the race grievance industry. Then you have the pandering of top levels of state/federal government for political advantage just screw the guy.

The clerk was fidgety and kept looking around, and out the window, and when I asked for a Lotto quick-pick, he didn't seem to know how to operate the machine. I tried to pay with my debit card, and he asked for cash, because the credit card machine was broken. Meanwhile, a car pulled up to the gas pump, and he seemed to have trouble with getting the pump authorized.
We called the police as we were leaving to advise them something was just not right there.
Turned out that the guy and his buddy had tied the clerk up in the back and were trying to get into the safe when we pulled up.
The clerk was fidgety and kept looking around, and out the window, and when I asked for a Lotto quick-pick, he didn't seem to know how to operate the machine. I tried to pay with my debit card, and he asked for cash, because the credit card machine was broken. As regards possible danger that you may let yourself in for by reporting a suspicious incident to the police, I don't think anybody really knows how they would react at such a time. I doubt whether there would be time to consider any possible consequences, and most people would react from instinct I suppose. Mostly it's only afterwards that you'd think - crikey, I could have been badly hurt there ! :-3

The question, in my case, was how would I have felt if I'd not reported it and someone had been shot as a result.
As you say, I could not have lived with the consequences.
