sharon shoesmith appeared on newsnight bleating that she hadnt worked worked since 2008 because since the baby p story no one would employ her terrible isnt it ( as i roll about laughing ED)
The former head of children's services at the council which failed to save Baby P from being tortured to death has claimed she was a 'victim' of the scandal.
Sharon Shoesmith defended Haringey Council despite its abject failure to prevent the death of the 17-month old, who was killed in August 2007 by his mother's sadistic boyfriend and his paedophile brother.
But last night Mrs Shoesmith claimed she was a 'victim' of the case. She said: 'Peter was a victim of male child homicide, but you know we have all been victims in this Former head of children's services at Haringey Council Sharon Shoesmith told Newsnight last night that she has not worked since 2008 despite applying for hundreds of jobs
Former head of children's services at Haringey Council Sharon Shoesmith told Newsnight last night that she has not worked since 2008 despite applying for hundreds of jobs
Asked by Newsnight presenter Evan Davies if she was a 'victim', Mrs Shoesmith responded: 'Peter was a victim of male child homicide, but you know we have all been victims in this Appearing on BBC's Newsnight she revealed she had not worked since 2008, despite applying for 'several hundred jobs She said: 'You can't simply sack people. I think there needs to be an honest process. The real issue here is about familial child homicide.'
Last year it emerged Mrs Shoesmith was awarded nearly £680,000 for unfair dismissal after Ed Balls sacked her in December 2008 during the height of public outrage over the killing.
Mrs Shoesmith attacked the way she was sacked. She said: 'When you have public accountability and harm to children then the result is explosive. You can't be accountable to a public that have been told lies.
'You can't have these kneejerk reactions. You have got to have some sort of process.'
Baby P, whose real name was Peter Connelly, was just 17 months old in 2007 when he was found dead in his blood-spattered cot at his mother's flat in Tottenham, north London, after suffering 50 separate injuries, including a broken back Sharon Shoesmith reveals on Newsnight how she felt like victim
Baby P's mother Tracey Connelly was jailed for failing to protect her child from her abusive boyfriend and his brother
He was given an indeterminate sentence with a minimum term of three years but has launched a bid to appeal against his sentence.
Jason Owen (left) and his brother Steven Barker tortured to death Baby Peter Connelly in 2007
His mother Tracey Connelly, who was jailed in 2009 for allowing her son Peter to be tortured to death by her boyfriend Steven Barker and his brother Jason Owen.
Connelly was released from County Durham's Low Newton jail at the end of October. Probation officers ruled though the woman was still a danger to children, she is no longer a danger to the public.
The case provoked a national scandal after it emerged that social workers, police and doctors missed a series of warning signs that could have saved the child's life Baby Peter had been seen by a string of social workers, police and health professionals, but they failed to take him into care. He had been on the 'at risk' register for months when he died.
Connelly's boyfriend was a sadistic neo-Nazi who raped a two-year-old girl, tortured his own grandmother and is suspected of sex attacks on other children His brother was a crack cocaine addict and convicted arsonist who was accused of raping a girl of 11.
In the wake of his death, Ofsted published a damning report which exposed deep failings in Mrs Shoesmith's department.
Haringey council also failed to save tragic eight-year-old Victoria Climbie who was killed in 2000 after being beaten, burned and tortured by her great aunt Marie Therese Kouao and her boyfriend Carl Manning claimed she was possessed and were found guilty of her murder in 2001.
During her Newsnight interview, broadcast last night, she admitted that the number of mistakes made had been 'breathtaking when you look at it all together', but refused to describe the failures as 'serious'.
'It depends how you're going to define serious. What is a serious failure?' she asked I believe I took responsibility and I believe that I was entirely accountable to my role.'
Haringey Council's failure to investigate his mother's lies meant Peter and eight other children were left inside their squalid home in North London.
Peter and his three sisters were sharing the four-bedroom house with their mother, her boyfriend Barker, his paedophile brother Owen and his four children, plus Owen's 15-year-old girlfriend.
Three of the children - Peter and two of his siblings - were on Haringey's Child Protection Register because of fears they were being neglected by their mother
Social workers, health visitors and doctors saw the family 60 times before 17-month-old Peter died from his horrific injuries, which included a snapped spine and eight broken ribs.
But none of these professionals realised that two men were living in the house, despite a family support official meeting 6ft 4in Barker during a home visit.
The most basic check into their backgrounds would have revealed that Barker had been prosecuted by the RSPCA for abusing animals, and that he and his brother were investigated for torturing their own grandmother.
Owen, who changed his name after a family row, has a string of convictions for burglaries, arson and assault, and was accused of raping an 11-year-old when he was only 13.
Barker and Owen were both convicted of causing or allowing Peter's death after he was found dead in 2007.
Barker was given 12 years while Owen was handed an indeterminate sentence but told he would be eligible for parole in three years.
Connelly admitted allowing her son's death and was also given an indeterminate sentence. Her five-year minimum tariff meant she would be eligible for release in 2012
At a subsequent trial in April, Barker was given a life sentence for the rape of the two-year-old, with a 20-year minimum.

I sat and watched the two hour documentary last night where she was Interviewed at length as well as the other, whining social workers.
It was actually quite revolting to sit there and watch her portray herself as the victim.
Her negligence led to a child's torture and death and she sat there whining about a process was not followed. How she had to utter brass neck, go alone knows.
She see's herself as the victim despite knowing and understanding that her failures led to the child being killed. her department saw baby P over 60 times In one year and she whines about how she's a victim.
Her whole presence In that Interview was stomach churning... on par with the Princess Diana Interview full of pathos and wide eyes. Talking about how It all affected her and how her life was changed.
What a truly revolting excuse for a human being.

Having watched the documentary, I thought there were failings on the part of social services, health and the police. It seems to me that changes need to be made in the overall system. I don't envy any of the individual workers their jobs. They clearly choose those jobs in order to help. In this case that didn't happen and the consequences were tragic.
However, what seems to be forgotten is that the little child's carers were wholly responsible for his torture and death.
I feel sickened and ashamed by the actions of those who made threats to the workers' families.

To be honest the program was on my TV, I didn't hang on every word, but on the face of it, you seem to have watched something else entirely.
No doubt there were failures on the part of of the Social Workers, but I thought the program went far deeper into the problem, and laid blame far wider than any single or collective section of the 'rolled up sleeve' Social worker depts involved.
So to test my understanding that the program was not as convinced it was so cut and dried as previously thought I perused some reviews, and here they are.

My opinion is as valid as yours, AA. That's the nature of opinions. Name calling is not going to make you more right than anyone else, however much you might wish it were so.

If my memory serves me correctly, Ed Balls Investigations deemed Shoesmith's office ' not fit for purpose.
By co-Incidence, late last night I watched the Investigation Into the death of Victoria Adjo Climbié also tortured and murdered In the same Haringay Council borough In 2008 aged 8 years old.
" Lisa Arthurworrey, who repeatedly failed to notice that Victoria was being tortured, was said by a tribunal to be 'another victim' in the Climbie tragedy."
Haringey Social Services - Victoria Climbie aged 8
Another victim ? How these disgusting people can ever claim they are victims Is beyond me. From what I saw last night, It's simple. None of them did the job they were paid to do.

Note the words " On par with the Princess Diana Interview"
Note the word " Interview " In that sentence.... Unless of course you can show us anything different that suggests I am likening the two personality wise.
Try reading what I've actually written and not what you Imagine I've written.

Well, I am wondering what you actually meant with that comment, myself. With nothing other than your words, it's hard to really fathom what you could mean there.
What is the point of bringing up the former princess' name in such a manner?
Just curious

Because, as with most divorce cases, there's fault to be found on both sides, yet Diana made the soulful puppy look famous as she recounted how hard done by she was. I've not seen the documentary, but judging by the descriptions thus far I can well understand exactly what Oscar means. It's not so much a comparison with Diana, herself, but how she portrayed herself with the intention of gaining the public sympathy.

It's exactly that. The poor woman sat alone on a chair. The uplighting to highlight the wide eyes. The demeanor of hand wringing, full of pathos and Inducing pity. It Is a style of Interview British Interviewers favour. I was expecting Martin Bashir to pop up any minute or Shoesmith to wail ' There was three of us In this child's death'

I reckon that had I seen the interview, I might have got it. I tend to avoid such things. I remember when the Diana interview was run, the wife and her sis sat through the whole thing. I found something else to do - I think I had to muck the stable - while they watched it.
Thanks for clearing that up.

They did the same style of Interview with Prince Charles but of course It works better with women. They dim the lights and then use an uplighter to highlight the wide eyes.
I have watched many Interviews In that style where the woman did deserve sympathy, such as, Denise Ferguson who's son was murdered or Sarah Payne who's daughter was murdered. Yet when they use that style on someone like Shoesmith who has been held accountable for this child's torture and death, It's stomach churning.
In fact, after Ed Balls Investigation Into the failings of her and her department, to see the woman sitting there whining about being unemployable or having no money and the effect It's had on her daughter, Is an Insult. Some things are just best not said.

IMO I find that exceedingly insulting to the memory of such a well respected and loved princess. To compare Shoesmith's whingeing interview with that of Princess Diana's interview, I believe, is totally inappropriate.
Note the word " Interview " In that sentence.... Unless of course you can show us anything different that suggests I am likening the two personality wise.
Try reading what I've actually written and not what you Imagine I've written.

Go and start an argument with yourself In an empty room Gill. I will not wreck Andy's thread.
Diana's personality and the manner In which Martin Bashir Interviewed her which was stomach churning pap desired to get sympathy, are worlds apart.
If you can not grasp the difference between a person In life and the style In which they are manipulated In an Interview, then I'll leave you to your own Imagination.

Clearly, Bruv.
According to the Guardian link, even Rebekah Brooks said that balance had gone out of the window in her paper's reporting of the case.

Baaaaaaaa
Well, I'm with Bruv and Theia, maybe we are the lone voice of reason around here.
There were many failures that happened during the case of Baby P.
What I don't really get is the demand for someone, anyone, to be sacked and shamed just to show that someone, anyone is getting the blame pointed directly at them to appease a baying public. Shame on that 'public'.

Would that be Rebecca Brooks who was accused of hacking a dead child's phone to get a story ? The same Rebecca Brooks who cheated on her husband with Andy Coulson who was found guilty of hacking the phone of a murdered teenager. The same Rebecca Brookes from the libelous and defunct News Of The World? She's hardly the epitome of decency Is she ?
Yet to be fair, you're right... the doco last night went Into the way The Sun newspaper In particular whipped up public feeling day after day after day. I'd even agree that the amount of media coverage and most of It pointed at Shoesmith was disproportionate. Yet, you can not get away from the fact that Baby P was seen 60 times by her department and nothing was done. You can't get away from the fact that Ed Balls Investigation found her department, not fit for purpose.
It's the same media coverage that Shaun Wright faced over the Rotherham Scandal. Shoesmith had no-one else to blame but herself for that media coverage as did Shaun Wright. When a government enquirey finds your department not fit or purpose and clearly negligent, the decent thing Is to resign. She refused and the more she refused. the more the media reported on that refusal because her very own actions led the public to see that she saw herself as the victim and not the dead child.
Had she of done the decent thing when asked, she wouldn't be sitting there now whining about how tough her life Is... she brought every bit of It on herself.

But that's just it, Oscar, Rebekah Brooks was Editor of the Sun at the time and EVEN she has since made the "balance" comment, according to the Guardian. I'm not making her out to be a paragon of virtue but pointing out that EVEN she, as former editor, has been critical of the lack of balance.
Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought the programme pointed out that only 17 out of the 60 visits were directly social services.
I agree that the director should have resigned but I'm wondering if she had much time to consider her position? I don't remember the actual time line but I'm sure her sacking happened very quickly.

No, she refused to resign.
Jenni talks to her about the case, her department’s failings, her refusal to resign and how she has responded to the vilification.
BBC - Radio 4 Woman's Hour -Sharon Shoesmith
In fact the petition for her to resign or be sacked led by The Sun ran for months and brought about over a million votes. She should have gone when asked Instead of now expecting sympathy.

Yes, you're right on the time line, Oscar. I couldn't access the Woman's Hour link but I found another article that gave me more details.

I think she brought much of It on herself.
Whenever there Is failings on a national scale, It's par for the course to call for resignations at the top. It's hypocritical to demand police chiefs resign, Chairmen of banks resign etc etc and then not call for her resignation.
I do agree that The Sun newspaper ran a witch-hunt on Shoesmith but It was In response for her refusing to budge from her very well paid job. Any head of department Involved In the torture and murder of a baby when they knew about that baby, had to go. She could not possibly have believed she could remain In the job.
I remember at the time, her blaming Junior social workers when Ed Balls Investigation showed that the buck stopped with her.
Had she of resigned when the scandal broke, by now, she'd have faded Into obscurity and probably have been able to get on with her life. It was the fact that she would not resign, and kept giving excuses as to why she shouldn't that saw The Sun continue with the witch hunt.
If she'd Immediately resigned, she would have been seen as human with compassion and feelings but her refusal and excuses at the time saw her as arrogant, uncompassionate and Inhuman. That's why The Sun campaign gathered so much pace and got over a million sigs.
So, all her whining now and portraying herself as a victim Is an Insult to some people. If she'd done the decent thing when asked, I doubt people would even remember her name right now.
The only person or circumstances she's a victim to, Is herself.

Don't forget I am now one of the working masses, and on a Thursday it's straight on to choir from work, so I don't get home untill about 23:00 (Leaving home at a little before 08:00).
When I get up, my routine is 06:15 - alarm goes off (maybe a couple of 9 min 'snoozes). Shave & shower. Make my sarnies. Get online & allow myself to wake up gradually to get into the right frame of mind. 07:30 get dressed. Look out of the window to get an idea of the weather, so as to decide whether or not to put on my Moon Suit & to decide how much time to allow for traffic. 07:45 - 08:00 fire up Da Beasty & hit the road. Arrive at the office about 08:30.
Toil all day (not bothering to stop for lunch - too much trouoble to get back into a flow).
Head home between 16:30 & 17:00 (depending on how much work left, if any).
Home at about 18:00. Get online. Check eMails. Get onto FG.
Next week should be fun - training newbies - even newbier than me (I don't believe it - 'newbier' didn't come up in my Spell Checker).
