M6 rubberneckners traced and fined by warwickshire police..the AA grumpy column

Post by AA grumpy »

sorry did i make you jump its only your old fag grumpy rifling through the ashtray of life to bring to light(was that bit a joke ED )

another story

More than 80 motorists have been prosecuted by police - for taking photographs of a single accident on the M6.

The rubber-neckers were all caught using their mobile phones to snap the dramatic lorry fire on the busy motorway in the West Midlands.

Cops captured the offending drivers on CCTV between junctions 4 and 4a in June and then traced them from their number plates.

It is believed to be the first time a police force has carried out a mass prosecution of rubber-neckers - who brought the opposite carriageway to a standstill The motorists have been sent letters by Warwickshire Police saying they were seen taking photos of the blazing overturned lorry.

The incident caused extensive tailbacks on both sides of the motorway - the busiest in the country.

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said: “People travelling northbound were seen by police taking pictures of the fire “They have been sent letters saying that they had been seen taking photographs.

“They have been told they can either pay a £100 fine and have three penalty points put on to their licences or contest the case in court.

A tweet from Warwickshire Police said: “Following a serious rtc (road traffic collision) on the M6 in the summer, we have secured 80 prosecutions for motorists using phones to photograph the scene.

well its not very often i agree with the police but for once in this case i do.

rubbernecking at an accident is not only dangerous but ghoulish as passing motorists possibly hope to see death or blood and realisticly should be an offence as its driving without due care and using a mobile phone while driving which in turn could have contributed to another accident.

but also on the other hand large portable screens should be carried to shield the accident from public gaze as they have in racing which they

put around the horse so no one can see whats going on behind the screen.

but now flip the coin over

wasnt it convienient and suspicious that a cctv unit or traffic camera van was nearby and just happend to attend the fire on the M6 and the camera mysteriously switched itself on and started to record.

the plods must have been trembling in their size 12 plod boots at the thought of all those fines that they could rake in.

only the police could make money out of something like this but the warwickshire chief super wont publicly admit to sending the van but it was just happened to be nearby (yeah right and rolf harris was innocent) the laws as bent as a nine bob note no wonder people have no faith in the police any more its just a cash making business like any other.

mind you £800 for couple of hours work isnt a bad pay day is it officer

mind how you go sir....

About 3 years ago on a main road In Bristol. My husband was driving me home from work and to cut a long story short, an elderly woman with two dogs stepped Into the road between parked cars. The driver who hit her was so young and I felt so bad for him. The woman went over the bonnet and bullseyed the windscreen. One dog went under the car.

As the windscreen was shattered, the young driver couldn't see and ended up In a wall. We were two cars behind It all so stopped and called police and ambulance. The woman was very obviously dead In the road and her head Injury wasn't pretty. The ambulances got there very quickly and It was obvious nothing could be done. The dog was lying In the road with a broken back but she was fully conscious. By now, the husband of the woman had arrived and he told me the dog's name was Belle. I called The Blue Cross ambulance and I sat In the road with the dog soothing her while the police made a cordon around us. The dog died later at the vets and the whole thing was so upsetting. It took us months to get over It.

Yet, I'll never forget those bastards who slowed down almost to a standstill to have a good look.

Fine the bastards £1,000 for all I care... do they never think of the distress of the people Involved ?

Rubberneckers annoy the crap outa me.

Once, some years ago when we lived near Raleigh, NC, we were driving I-40 on our way to meet friends for dinner in Chapel Hill. Suddenly traffic came to a near stop. For the next 30 minutes we covered a whole 3 miles. As we came around a bend in the highway, we saw a Local TV news team in the median, Lights on and one of the news persons talking to the camera. As we passed them the road opened up and traffic resumed standard breakneck speeds. The Eastbound lanes were now backed up, and remained so for at least 5 miles. We never saw anything that could explain the tie-up, until that evening on the eleven 0'clock news there was a piece on traffic in Raleigh Metro, with the camera scanning the backed up traffic. We even saw our very own car drift slowly by.

So, all of the back-up was from rubberneckers slowing down to see what the News Team was filming.

I agree that it's about time something was done about it. The rubberneckers not only cause tailbacks by their slowing right down, so as to get a better look, but it detracts their attention from the road & frequently results in another accident.

To be fair, it doesn't say it was a CCTV Van - there's no reason for it to be so. The static CCTVs located all the way along the motorways give 100% coverage, at an extremely high resolution which is constantly being recorded 24/7. The whole incident as well as the rubberneckers would probably have monitored that way in such high detail as to identify not only the registration plates, but the drivers themselves. Come to that, they could probably identify the make of phone they were using.

What do they think or hope they are going to see ? How can anyone slow down to watch someone else's misery ?

Trouble Is, when you're stuck In a line of neckers, you have to sit there In your car If you can't over-take and then people think you're rubber necking.

The one with the old lady, I was sitting In the road with the dog who was a bit of a mess, so I covered her with a blanket so just her head was In my lap. To the neckers, It must have looked like a small dead child lying there and they couldn't get their necks out of their windows far enough to gawp. I was waiting on the animal ambulance and one woman came to a standstill right by me and literally just sat there gawping. The police officer who was shielding us from cars told her move on three times... and she still didn't move... sick ****witt.... finally she told the officer ' I just stopped to ask If you've called a vet'... yeah right... It was probably the only time I've banged off every swear word known to man and had a police officer allow me to do It.

We came across another one, one night on the A23 from Croyden, South London. A car was wrapped around the central reservation and as It was the small hours of the morning and hardly anything on the road, we were the first to come across It. We had no Idea If emergency services had been called so we stopped. The woman was obviously very dead and the man was through the windscreen. We heard the sirens In the distance so got the hell out of there very quickly. We read In the papers the next day that both had died.
