I have never joined a fan club but I joined one today.

The Mad Moose fan club

Yes, he's a race horse but he Is the example of what makes horse racing so great. Every now and then, along comes a right character.

The first few minutes of this clip was Mad Moose at the Cheltenham Festival In March, which he did again 4 weeks later at the Aintree Festival.

And this Is what he did today.

Never mind... his connections reported that he had a lovely day out larking about with some other horses.

Basically Yes but It's a wonderful example of those who don't like horse racing think those who do just see a field of runners.

Mad Moose was the talk of facebook yesterday and I think that's why British horse racing Is the huge Industry that It is. It's all about the horses and when we get a character like Moosie come about, we tae them to our hearts.

I just found the post on facebook yesterday so funny when his stable girl wrote ' Oh well, he had a nice day out In the Lorry and had a lark about with some other horses. No upset there at losing their race entrance fee.

So the big question last night was would Mad Moose be banned from racing after his connections were warned at York last month over his shannaghans.

Apparently not due to the technicality that he did actually start.... well sort of.... more strolled out of the starting gate, stopped, had a good look around, decided to have a lark about which just broke Into a trot which technically means he did start albeit In his own time and when he felt like It.

The madness being that by that point he was approx 30 lengths behind the field and by the finish, he had caught up the back marker.

Maybe next time.... whatever... Mad Moose Is now box office material and long may he give us racing folk the belly laughs.

Wonder what Her Majesty thought of his antics?

Following the 3 pm today at Sandown Park, Mad Moose refused to start the race again.

I've actually lost count now, Is It 4 or 5 he has refused to start and 2 or 3 he sort of started?

Following today's race The Moose was the subject of a stewards Inquiry.

They Interviewed Nigel Twiston-Davies, the trainer. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the start, and noting that he had also refused to race at Aintree on 5 April, Cheltenham on 14 March and York on 25 May 2013, the Stewards referred MAD MOOSE (IRE)’s behaviour to the British Horseracing Authority

Behaviour ?????????????????? Never mind, by all accounts he had a lovely day out In the lorry and a lark about with some other horses.

Come on BHA... we need the likes of the Mercurial Mad Moose to entertain us and keep the sport alive. Long may Moosie reign.

I'm no expert on the rules of the BHA ( British Horse Racing Authority ) but looking at the start of the race, I can understand why the stewards have referred to Moosie's antics as his behaviour and not refusal.

Technically he started, albeit In a 'oh If I really must type kind of way) so surely they can't ban him from racing for an R ( refusal ).

Watching the start again, It's clear the horse has no Interest In much except what's going on to the the left of him. Very easily distracted horse as we've seen In the past with him.

Why should he be banned? He technically started and refused the first fence In a ' nope, aint jumping that type way'. That's no cause for a ban. Thousands of horses refuse fences.

But I am sorry... even though this behaviour Is a huge disappointment to his owners and connections, I just have to laugh at his trainer Nigel Twiston-Davis being the only trainer on the course at the start running after Moosie to get him to start.... at least he didn't wave that belt again.

Mad Moose.... on the far right

The decision has been made today and It's official then....

Mad Moose banned by British Horseracing Authority

Mad Moose has been forbidden from competing by the British Horseracing Authority.

The gelding has refused to race or tailed off in four of his last eight races.

Officials looked at the record of the horse, trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, after pulling up in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown last month.

And the panel has ruled that no further entries will be accepted for the 10-year-old.

Mad Moose was once considered one of the most promising horses in Twiston-Davies' stable.

He produced a come-from-behind win at Cheltenham in April 2012 hailed as "one of the most extraordinary performances in recent times" , and last year finished runner-up to Sprinter Sacre on Festival Trials Day.

But in recent times he had become more famous for his headstrong antics. He disrupted the start of the Sandown race, and pulled up before the first fence.

The disciplinary panel considered the available evidence, including from Twiston-Davies himself, but decided to put a premature end to Mad Moose's career.

As the details of the ban are made clear, It appears Moosie will have a review In 9 months time,

Sam Twiston-Davis responded with this.

Sam Twiston-Davies responds to MAD MOOSE ban on the Morning Line:

"It's sad he's got nine months off when a horse who takes steroids only gets seven months,

"They [BHA] said it's because of the punters but everyone knows Mad Moose. If you were to back him you'd only be having £1 each-way in the fact he might jump off at a massive price."

He's right... those who bet on Mad Moose know there Is every chance he'll refuse so they don't bet large amounts of money.

The excuse that the BHA are thinking of the punters Is a cop out.

A review In 9 months then and looks like The Moose will be targeted at the flat... now that's a dissappointment to me actually but I respect Nigel's decision.

Would have loved to see him over the jumps and do this again...What he's capable of when In the mood.

Update and news from neighing circles.

The British Horse Racing Authority have ruled the ban will not be overturned.

However, after the 9 month ban, they may give him one more chance on the Flat.

Now, It's pretty much odds on that he'll refuse to come out of the stalls but at least we'll get to see the nutter once more In the parade ring. If he refuses, It's a life time ban.

Where ever that race Is, us devotee's will be there wearing our tee-shirts bearing the slogan ' Watch out watch, Mad Moose Is about'

Can't wait.

Mad Moose review by The British Horse Racing Authority Is due soon.... But, here's something we never thought of before... If Scotland wins Independence and The Moose Is banned permanently , he could still race In Scotland...

That's a point - would animals from Scotland be subject to the Quarantine laws - and how would we stop those Feral Haggises from crossing the border?

It will certainly open up am minefield of complications for the BHA... Some of my horses race In Scotland, have to see how this pans out.

No such thing as a feral race horse. The BHA can track every foal. They have to be registered and Insured before they start their compulsary 3 race qualifying to be awarded a handicap by the BHA... These days, even blood samples are taken from foals to prove the bloodstock.

So Moosie could be back on the track by November... Oscar gets to wear her tee shirt ' watch out watch out, Mad Moose Is about'

So the BHA now claim they banned Moosie to protect the betting public... oh please... what utter bollocks !!! Put It this way. You're In the bookies or on the track and the next race has entrants with form all similar to each other, along the lines of 23871247... then you see Mossie's form 21RR8RR9RR,RR,RR ie.. refused... are you going to get your last quid and put It on the Moose? No

Fans and devotee's of the Moose may just have a fiver for a laugh or even, that he may just behave himself and be In the mood to give a performance akin to the day he gave Sprinter Sacre a challenge at Cheltenham.

The BHA are Insulting our Intelligence claiming they are protecting the betting public. :-5

In fact, rather than protect the betting public, who frankly would have to be barking mad to wager large amounts on a horse who has refused so many times, what about the hundreds of people like me, who would actually travel the length and bredth of the country to see Moosie on the day, thus putting our hard earned dosh Into the bank accounts of those courses.?

BRITISH racing can look forward to welcoming back one of its most enigmatic dual-purpose performers after reluctant starter Mad Moose was on Thursday cleared to return to the track.

Although the ten-year-old was banned indefinitely from the sport in January, trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies took advantage of the BHA disciplinary panel intimating it would be prepared to review the matter after nine months when successfully applying for the order to be lifted.

The disciplinary panel directed that if Mad Moose refuses or is reluctant to start in the next six months the matter should be referred back to the BHA.

I'll close this thread with one last photograph, courtesy of ' Harris Equine Photography '.

Mad Moose after refusing to race yesterday at Cheltenham slowly makes his way back from the start of the race where a cheering crowd awaited him. I find the picture extremely poignant... It's the last time we'll see him on a British Race course.

I've seen horses do this before.

I don't know what It was with The Moose. I've seen so many sites discussing why he refuses and what the remedy was even cruel comments about his trainer. Yet, trainers like Nigel Twiston-Davies can't train champions like The New One and Blaklion If they were no good.

I'm no expert In horse pysche. My brothers race horses who live with him In West Sussex treat me with total Indifference. I remember one day when It was my job to go and get one In from the field... B... after 3 hours, I had to admit defeat and go and get my brothers mother In Law or I'd have been there all night. So, I am no expert. Yet, I have been there when The Moose has raced or supposed to have raced on the courses. In the pre-parade rings and saddling enclosure, he seemed very at ease with the crowds and he'd go down to the start readilly... I've studied his behaviour at the starts many times and noticed that as the race Is about to start, he's always looking to the left of the course, even turning around to face the left. My humble opinion Is that he loved all the attention of the crowd at the parade ring but once down at the start of the race, Isolated, half a mile away, he was bored and far more Interested In what the crowd was doing In the Grandstand to the left. Maybe he just thought that he'd done his job by parading for the crowds and wanted to get back there... I don't know.... another one who kept refusing was the Grand National entrant, Battle Group... they had to retire him also.... we had one that we had shares In, Nelson's Bay that also refused.
