I'm still keeping my resolution from one made years ago - not to make any New Years' Resolutions.

I am very proud of myself. I have not broken my New Year's resolution from three years ago a single time. "I will never take the Lord's name in vain again."

I got a little tired, then a little disgusted, and finally downright incensed at the frequency and flippancy that people took the Lord's name in vain. OM_ even became popular. I found it disrespectful, and I began to feel a little strange myself when I would say it on accident when I'd hurt myself. So I changed my speech patterns, OM_ became "Oh my goodness," "G_dammit" became "Blast it all!" ( I didn't need to change "Jesus Christ" because I have never used his name as a swear word, and never would. I love him too much for that.)

After all, I have asked the Lord many times for help over the last two decades. My wife of twenty years has been horribly ill (dozens upon dozens of major surgeries, amputation, resections, strokes, heart attacks, hospitalized hundreds of times.) and I found that, if I called upon Him, not selfishly for my needs, but unselfishly for hers...He always answered. Sometimes in the most miraculous ways. (She was once dead for over 34 minutes and the Lord brought her back to me.)

I resolved never to take the Lord's name when I didn't really need Him.

And since then, I never have.

I guess New Year's resolutions must be those things which you most want to do and are really serious about. It's about sincere belief, not a pale wish.

Perhaps vaguely so... but it's not His name! Aha! :)

I've got my 3 month appraisal of a 6 month probationary period on the 2nd. Let's just hope that bodes well for the New Year.

I don't have much resolve. I have been very depressed for the last few months---desperately so. It won't resolve by itself. I am at a loss regarding how I can be anything but what I am. I'm in a very bad place. Apologies to you all for bringing down this thread.

Nothing to be sorry for. I have similar tendencies from time to time, being bi-polar myself. As far as I'm concerned you are welcome to use the forums as a sounding board.

Same here from me, Anne. I'm here and can understand what you're saying only too well

I was too, couldn't believe how bad it had got actually. But now I just keep taking the pills and whilst it's not a living joy at the moment it is more bearable. You could talk with us on your own thread if you feel this one has been hijacked :-6

Dates confuse me. It is said that Jesus wasn't really born on the day we celebrate it and the New Year is celebrated by different cultures on different days, so I'm never quite sure what day my resolutions are best registered anyway. And how important is that date? What about alcoholics? If they fall off the wagon must they wait till the New Year before having another go at it?

I never make new years resolutions but this year, I have.

No more will I ever give out my home phone number how ever well I think I know someone, to someone on the Internet. Or, I may do that In some circumstances until the moment I feel I am being used and then I'll cut them off. When I have spent hours of my life that I will never get back, listening and lending a kindly, sympathetic ear to those who want to do no more than find a new audience to bang on about their own personal problems and c.ock up's In life only to be kicked In the teeth, then they can find some other Idiot.

It's not something I do regually but no more will I stay up half the night listening to someone bang on about their divorce, whatever, simply because they have no-one else to whine to. I could be rude and tell them straight that I'm not Interested but I don't. I let them bang on and on In the belief that I'm helping In some small way by being a kindly ear. These people are not friends, they are selfish. They don't give a rats about your day, you're just another sucker for them to off load on. I have enough people In my life that I don't need people like this and I've been way too polite In the past.

Interesting. I more often think of a resolution as something one has decided to deprive oneself of, for one's own good of course. This above statement is more of a vengeance against the world. I am not all too sure this qualifies as a resolution, Oscar.

It's quite simple... I will not be giving my phone number again to people on the Internet.

:wah::wah::wah:I'll make an exception If you abide by the following..

1) You don't talk about your relatives as though I am supposed to know them.

2 ) When I say ' oh well, I really must get on', you don't completely Ignore me and continue whittering.

3 ) You don't talk about your past life thinking that I already know what you're talking about.

4) You don't drop names Into the conversation that I have absolutely no Idea of who you are slating.

5) You don't assume I am champing at the bit to know all about your divorce and dreary goings on.

6) You don't use me to hate the people you hate.

Apart from that, I can't see a problem. :wah:

I should have no problem with that list except for the last entry. I don't why it is that many take it for granted that their friends should be compelled to dislike those one žhates“. I have my own theory on it.

SARCASM ALERT

I think the proper term might be “counter psychology. And beyond that reverse-counter psychology, double-reverse counter psychology, multi-counter double reverse psychology and eventually on to zero-max multi-counter double reverse psychology which entails straight forward intimidation without a hint of any added sweeetners. :D
