Child Neglect ?

Post by Bruv »

It was a one-mile walk home from a Silver Spring park on Georgia Avenue on a Saturday afternoon. But what the parents saw as a moment of independence for their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, they say authorities viewed much differently.

How the world has changed.

Are these 'Free-range' parents irresponsible or are the authorities over the top ?

Child Neglect ?

Post by FourPart »

I was walking to school on my own by the time I was 5, and I imagine the same is true of most members of this forum. I believe this is a result of the Nanny State. Some may claim that it is more dangerous these days for children to be on their own. I'm not so sure it is - rather a matter of the dangers are more widely recognised these days but we always had it drilled into us 'not to take sweets from strangers', etc. Surely the responsible thing would be to educate children more in the same way.
