RIP Da Beasty

On the way home from work, just approaching the final stretch at the mini roundabout before my turn off I slowed down (as is proper), then as I went to accelerate the engine went into high revs, but with no drive to the wheel. It might be something fairly straightforward, but I think the time has come to call it a bad job, as it's no longer financially viable to keep getting it fixed.

So, as soon as I got home I phoned my Lne Manager to let him know that I might be late in tomorrow, which could be a problem, seeing as I have the office keys, and I would have to rely on Public Transport for the first time ever in getting to the office. He just told me to take tomorrow off on Compassionate Leave (seriously).

However, knowing that one way or another I was going to have to have transport I looked on Gumtree & found this one for £750 - A Bargain. Less than a year old. Only 123km on the clock (about 75 miles), and a full tank of petrol.

Actually, the going price was £725, but for some reason when I paid him I thought it was £750, so paid £25 over the odds, but it's still well worth it.

I think I'll call this one "Jubbly" (Short for "Lubbly Jubbly"), because of the Registration.

The only thing I can find wrong with it is that the mirrors are missing, but that's no problem. I can easily find some replacements on eBay - come to that, the ones from Da Beasty may even fit - they are, after all, only about 6 months old (older than Jubbly), but with a new machine I may as well go the whole hog & get the right ones for the model. Plus I'll have to get me a decent chain, as Da Beasty had its own built in one.

Da Beasty is dead.........

Technically Da Late Beasty is Da Beasty 2. Silvio named the first one "The Beast", then when that one got pinched & written off, the new one got called "The Beast Junior" (abbreviated to BJ), and then developed to Da Beasty.

Our newest one is named Camille.

My old Lincoln is Harvey.

It must have been a worrying moment, still moving in traffic and no power. I remember losing top gear in an automatic once, coming off the M4. It's not a moment I'd want to test again.

My concern was more for Da Beasty. I had slowed, almost to a stop for the roundabout, already near the kerb. It was then just a case of pulling to the side, checking if it would bite a few times, then giving up & pulling it up onto the pavement.

While pushing it home, on the few occasions where there was a length going downhill I'd sit on it & coast, getting a much needed breather. At which point, a Police Patrol Car slowed right down by me, probably having seen me, in full biking gear (orange moonsuit & helmet) apparently riding on the pavement with no lights. Then they realised the engine wasn't running & drove on - by which time I had reached the dip of the downhill stretch & had to get off to continue pushing.

By the time I got home I was soaked through with sweat.

Da Beasty has just been collected & gone to a good home for £113 (although I didn't bother with the odd £3) sold on eBay. The customer was well pleased with the deal & had placed a maximum bid of £250. I was well pleased with the deal as I had been on the verge of letting it go for £35 - £40 after the first few days of it being online. He checked out all the physical characteristics & agrees it's probably just a drive belt gone or, at worst, the clutch & has plans on doing it up for himself or to sell on.
