Are you suggesting we ignore the first paragraph, which provides the context for paragraph two? It accepts the terms offered - the "provisions" - of the Potsdam declaration, and within that context it orders an unconditional surrender of all Japanese belligerents.

Potsdam Declaration does not call for "unconditional surrender."

It does say

4. The time has come for Japan to decide whether she will continue to be controlled by those

self-willed militaristic advisers whose unintelligent calculations have brought the Empire

of Japan to the threshold of annihilation, or whether she will follow the path of reason.

5. Following are our terms. We will not deviate from them. There are no alternatives. We

shall brook no delay.

6. There must be eliminated for all time the authority and influence of those who have

deceived and misled the people of Japan into embarking on world conquest, for we insist

that a new order of peace, security and justice will be impossible until irresponsible

militarism is driven from the world.

As far as the Emperor, when he announced to his subjects the surrender, his fate was uncertain.

Emperor Hirohito, Accepting the Potsdam Declaration, Radio Broadcast

HOW THE UNITED STATES PROTECTED JAPANESE WAR CRIMINALS

AND FACILITATED JAPAN'S DENIAL OF WAR GUILT AND WAR CRIMES

Those actions were the protection of Emperor Hirohito from prosecution as a war criminal and the premature winding up of Allied war crime prosecutions in East Asia and the Pacific region. Both actions were based entirely on political expediency.

EMPEROR OF RUINS: HIROHITO IN POST-WAR JAPAN

History is written by winners. When a conflict ends and a truce is signed, the aims and philosophies of the vanquished — their justifications for fighting, whether they instigated the war or were simply defending themselves against an aggressor — the aims of the vanquished devolve into irrelevancies at the moment of capitulation. This is hardly an argument, however, that might makes right; anyone with even a tenuous grasp of history knows that might and right usually have little to do with one another. Instead, the old saying about history and winners is simply an acknowledgement of an ancient, if somewhat barbaric, understanding between warring nations: to the victor go the spoils, and nothing is more valuable than control of the conflict’s narrative.

That Hirohito was not tried for war crimes — as so many members of his military were — remains one of the most questionable decisions made by the Allies, and specifically by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, after the war. Hirohito was, by most accounts, fully engaged in the military decisions and the culture of domination that sparked the murderous invasion of China in the 1930s and spawned the savagery that defined the acts of so many Japanese troops throughout the Second World War.

Tokyo War Crimes Trials - Harry S. Truman Library

Background information

General Douglas MacArthur decided, with President Truman's concurrence, not to place Emporer Hirohito on trial. He was seen by the victors as a much needed leader and symbol for the new, peaceful and democratic Japan to arise from the ashes of WW II. The U.S. was entering a new Cold War era and needed a militarily purged, newly reborn Japan as any ally with Hirohito as its unifying symbol.

My literalist mind is utterly incapable of exaggeration. Bearing in mind the "by comparison", I think it was an accurate comment.

It is not about being dumb.

Obviously he is well educated.

Obama seeks more police training, avoids addressing Ferguson head-on managed to work his way into the White House.

Congrats

How about doing something about the animals which wander our streets?

The problem is that the media insist on promoting the Ferguson issue as a Racist one, where a poor innocent, family apple pie loving, all American boy got murdered, just because of the colour of his skin rather than that he was an armed robber (proved by the CCTV footage) who got shot whilst trying to take a Police Officer's gun from him. After all, where's the readership value of just another crook getting gunned down as a consequence of his actions. For Obama to 'face it head on' just gives fuel to the fire by giving the media what they want.

Don't forget, Obama doesn't need votes any more. He's only allowed to do 2 consecutive stints, regardless of whether the public wants to democratically vote him in for a 3rd term or not, and he can hardly be accused of being Racist against Blacks.

I honestly don't believe that. Having degrees isn't necessarily a sign of being well-educated. Lots of wealthy families pay their way through colleges and universities. And you know what the fellow who graduates last in his class is called, don't you? “Graduate.

True dat. A good number of years ago there was an Egyptian-born Swedish citizen by the name of Refaat el-Sayed . He took over a failing company called Fermenta . He turned it round and made it an extremely successful business, employing ¦.. well, lots! He was even crowned “Swede of the Year. But some nosey reporter with a personal dislike for Refaat started to dig. He found out that Refaat had falsified his university achievements and awards. In short, he was not qualified for the job he took on. He ended up in prison! :wah:

You DEMAND?

All you have to do is ask.

Of course term limits can only be changed by a Constitutional amendment.

Changing law by dictate was an exaggeration. It is no secret BHO is not very good when it comes to horse trading.

I never had the impression GWB made decisions during his White House tenure as President, the feel was far more that he was told what was going to happen and what to say. His dad, as President, at least had a significant voice in his own Administration's direction.

Merely a willingness to front a team which turned out to be lethally untrustworthy, I'd have thought. The team existed and it needed a telegenic stooge with adequate political credentials.

You'd need to try the whole pack of them at a war crimes trial to find that out. America will be irredeemably stained until that despicable Administration is thoroughly and impartially investigated.

I'm not really sure about that. I can't quote George Orwell or Josef Göbbels but both of them said something about repeating a lie (or a cover story/cover up) long enough till it's accepted as truth. Go to any discussion forum where there is a dominant, American membership and you can argue till the end of time with those who say the invasion of Irak had nothing to do with WMD's ¦.. but was for the purpose of “a regime change. Introducing the question of oil, reinstating the petrol-DOLLAR, business advantages, etc. is met with a stiff palm. It was a regime change, that's all there was to it. Or just talk with Lenn, here on another thread, who will probably tell you that talk of anything less than righteous acts by the west is instigated by “Muslim propaganda. So the stain is bleaching out in the sun out it seems.

I sometimes tease people when asked why this or that happened, and they put forward their point of view.

I say that that is the "Excuse" not the "Reason"............sometimes.....us the public, the electorate, get told the "Excuse" and accept it as the "Reason"

We never get to know the real reason until there is an Inquiry..............and most times not even then.
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth
