Things I Think About -----Passed Away???
Why don't they just say he or she is DEAD or has DIED or was killed. Is PASSED AWAY supposed to be a gentler way to say that some one has BIT THE BULLET, BOUGHT THE FARM, CROAKED? PASSED AWAY. Did they PASS AWAY after they were killed or were they killed first and then PASS AWAY? Where did they pass away to?:-3

"Passed Over" is the one I could never figure. It just doesn't make sense no matter how you view it.

Things I Think About -----Passed Away???
I am reminded of an incident back in Grade school.
Our teacher died during the Christmas holiday. She was a fairly old lady. (well late sixties seemed old to us 11-year-olds)
Anyway, she was a fairly popular teacher.
I heard a ditty, that started something like, "Ta ra ra boom de ay, Out teacher's Cast away...,"
I started signing ing on the bus, and my friend Jimmy, turned around and slugged, me, knocking me to the floor.
When I looked up, he had tears in his eyes, and was yelling at me.
Turned out he thought I said ...passed away...
I have always remembered that whenever anybody says that someone passed away.
I never say, it, myself.

It's from roman/greek mythology - passed over the river styx in to the underworld, also paying the ferryman it's where the custom of putting a coin in the mouth or pennies on the eyes come from.

That makes sense, I suppose. However, I think you'll find that the believe of the pennies / coins on the eyes is a more modern misinterpretation. Yes, the coins did come into it, but they would be carried in a purse. The coins placed on the eyelids was done by undertakers preparing the body for burial in order to keep the eyes shut. These days, I think they stitch them.

Many a true word spoken in jest. Superglue would make a very good substitute, and is probably in common use for that very purpose. It was, after all designed for the particular purpose of gluing skin together, for use by Field Medics in Vietnam, where sutures would be impractical & too time consuming.

According to a friend who was in the funeral home business, that is exactly what they use.

Plastic caps are inserted under the eye lids to keep them closed. Rigor Mortis has nothing to do with the eyes.

Skin starts to shrink after death as it loses its elasticity, which is also what led to the misconception that nails continue to grow after death. They don't but the skin covering the base of them shrinks back.
The reason for the closing of the eyelids is more cosmetic than anything else so that in an Open Casket send off (which is not very common in the UK - in fact I've never even known of one), the mourners don't get freaked out by the body staring at them.

Rigor Mortis can last for a long time and the more muscular the body the worse the rigor. Atheletes for example will develop more severe rigor and it will last longer. LIVOR MORTIS is the discoloration of parts of the body due to blood seeking the dependent parts of the body (gravity) and usually accompanies rigor mortis. The embalming procedure can rectify both conditions.
