I thought I'd try to understand Twitter so I red How to Use Twitter (with Cheat Sheet) - wikiHow
Nothing has actually gone in yet. I can see the page but the content is incomprehensible. Does anyone know a better introduction? I have grasped that I can write sentences into the Twitter system, but that nobody will reed them. I can append a # to a forum name and my sentence will add itself to a collection of tweets on the same subject, though I can't tell how anyone else reeds those either. I can also prefix another tweeter name with @ and send the equivalent of a brief email. Why would I not just send an email?
Someone edify me.

I don't know either. Do you need to be "followed" ?

I've no idea. Were one a public figure whose words might be of interest to the general celebrity-obsessed public then quite possibly, but I'm obviously not. No cult status attaches to me. I have not the gravitas of Stephen Fry, the charm of Sally Bercow or the notoriety of Mr Morgan. I am not Sue Perkins. "Lay down your nets and follow me" is unlikely to be heeded were I to address anyone in such a manner.

It has never bothered you here.............having gravitas......I mean.
I think the idea is that you just dive in, 'follow' somebody you feel suits you for whatever reason, and then when you want, sow your own thoughts into the conversation/tweet feed, and then you too will gain followers for your wit and wisdom................or not as the case may be.

But I don't actually believe that to be true. Using a system without understanding how or why it's meant to operate seems insane. Writing to nobody seems insane. Trusting reeders will just turn up out of nowhere may be part of how it's meant to operate but I have severe doubts about that.

Let me check, maybe I have it wrong.
As far as I can see, following someone doesn't increase the number of people reeding what I write by any at all. All it does is increases the number of tweets which are pushed onto my own screen.
There's no mechanism at all for me to choose to put anything I write onto anyone else's screen unless I explicitly name them, as in an email.
The point eludes me still.

I've never understood Twitter either. It just seems to be a Geek's Playground. It's like the original Text Messages that were limited to a number of characters, which led to TXTSPK. How can you post a meaningful post in 140 letters or less?
I felt those Electoral Debate programmes that were Twitter based were very one-sided, by their nature, as it disregarded non Twitter users. It would have been far more Universal had the programmes been set up with a FaceBook page for the night. In that way, I think most users would be able to interact quite easily.

Did you read (with an a) my contribution ?
You have to start somewhere..........................if you just start tweeting into the vastness of tweetdom your voice/tweets will not be seen/heard.
By following somebody that tickles your interest (could be Billy Brag or Beyonce) you then retweet or comment into their feed. The quality of your tweets encourages others of a similar ilk to follow you.
Tweeting to me is the online version of heckling, serious pithy or witty one liners to satisfy your own ego and amuse strangers by their reaction........the reaction is answers/retweets replies or followers.

Folks who follow you see your tweets in their feed. If they retweet you, the folks that follow them see your tweet and may opt to follow you also.

I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

This is the bit I thought dubious. You're saying that if I follow, for example, Beyonce who has ten million followers, and I comment into her feed, ten million Twitter users will have my comment delivered to their screen? If - as I assume - that's not what you mean, what did you actually mean and what effect does my comment have?

Yes, that bit I grasp, but nobody will be following me to do the reeding or retweeting.

Beyonce has 14 million followers, so unless you are "Crazy in Love" and can't live without her utterances I wouldn't bother. But as far as I understand, yes, if you comment into her feed, your words are shared with her followers. Of course with 14 million potential answers per tweet and all in 'real time' tweets are soon out of date unless they are popularly retweeted.

I only ask because I find it inconceivable that that's what happens.
If you mean something different, perhaps you could describe just that bit in more detail.

Again the way I understand it, you have to 'visit' a feed, re-tune to that channel, Beyonce's feed in this instance, and as a follower you can add tweets to it. It is not like email where everything gets downloaded whether you want it or not, you merely 'visit' an on line 'real time' conversation, like tuning into The Archers in real time.
To see what Billy Bragg has to say you re-tune/visit his feed......you only ever see the current feed unless you delve backward.
I'm sure I have a Twitter account somewhere, but I just couldn't be assed.
