Tragedy or self inflicted ?

Post by Bruv »

The UK’s heaviest man, who weighed 65 stone, has been found dead in his Dover flat.

The fire brigade, police and ambulance staff took several hours to remove Carl Thompson, 33, from his home. His body was removed using a small crane.

After five heart attacks, and unable to walk or dress himself, with a team of NHS workers to wash and feed him, why didn't he take the warnings seriously ?

Perhaps 33 was all he wanted out of life and so enjoyed what he did to the fullest in spite of the consequence of an early death.

Tragedy or self inflicted ?

How many smokers have heard that they will die if they don't quit their habit? And how many carry on until the advisors are proved correct?

Addicts cannot easily quit. Especially when they are surrounded by enablers, as this man apparently was.

Not like he could get up and go out to get another burger on his own.

Every once and a while you hear this kind of story.

Tragedy or self inflicted ?

Smokers are refused treatment for heart conditions requiring surgery unless they give up. I am overweight - even technically 'obese' (although I don't consider myself as such), and even I have been refused surgery on the tumours on the back of my neck until such time as I reach a target weight. I was making good progress, but then plateaued out & nothing I did after that had any effect, no I ended up giving up on the diet - although I haven't put much of it back on. The point is, I question whether it was right to have expected the NHS to fork out & foot the bill for all the additional care he had to undergo.

There is a big difference being over weight or even obese compared to the condition of that poor man.

I wonder if it could be argued he needed to be gastric banded against his will, as the weight was an addiction or illness that affected his ability to decide what was best for himself ?
