I have noticed that there are more and more mistakes, spelling, grammar etc. and I feel sure this is because people rely more and more on 'spell-checkers' instead of having 'proof-readers'. I'm sure a proof-reader would have noticed that error '40' and had it corrected before publication. By the way, Mr. Spot, do you get a red line beneath your 'red' or your 'reeder' ? I've just been given a red line under my 'reeder' but not under 'red' of course, because I suppose the spell-checker recognises it as being a colour ! I always have a bit of a titter when 'arse' is permitted but the other word for mule is not ! Why can't we have a British spell-checker on British PCs ?
In our local daily newspaper, in the classified advertisements, the favourite mistake is 'birth' when writing about sleeping arrangements inside a boat or caravan, when it should be berth !

It is surely more informative, and takes less space, to write "Queen to visit Bergen-Belsen". Few people would fail to recognize the name, after all.

The news link text says "Princess Charlotte to be christened".
And the absolute impossibility of Princess Charlotte not being christened? Where does that come into it.
"Princess Charlotte to be christened" is a statement of inevitability. "Princess Charlotte will not be christened", that would be news, the nation would talk of nothing else for weeks, the disestablishment of the Anglican Church would go onto the front burner and the order of succession would be debated in both Houses.
How can the question of whether Princess Charlotte is to be christened or not ever have been raised, much less reported? The BBC would do better to discuss the desirability of the child's future education taking place within the State system, that would be a more interesting use of the webpage in question.

I have a microwave oven which emits more than 55 dB and nobody's ever described it as loud. Perhaps the village was too noisy for the reporter, or the villager, to hear clearly what was being said.

The trouble is that sound, like music through speakers, is always so much louder and intrusive in the evening and over night as there is not much ambient noise to off-set music festival noise, like there is during daytime when there is more traffic and more aircraft noise. It is also a fact that the electric bass thumping of any band is far more noticeable a mile away than any other instrument or voice, and this can be very irritating over a long period.

Bruv;1482578 wrote: Coots are gay ? They are not even flamboyantly coloured
I think the more common form is alliterative -
OED: (as) queer as a coot (slang): conspicuously or flamboyantly homosexual; (also) conspicuously odd or peculiar. Cf. coot n.1 2b.
eg. 1961 N. Coward Diary 5 Mar. (2000) 466, I do wish that years ago Cyril had faced up to the fact that he was as queer as a coot.
The OED maintains that the original, long ago, was "mad coot" and referred (so they claim) to a bird also called a coot back then, the Foolish Guillemot. So if there was a "mad as a coot" and people like Coward enjoyed alliteration, the way they might, "queer as a coot" (with the double meaning of queer as mad as well as gay) makes sense, queer then being deniable as a reference to homosexuality. On reflection, "gay as a coot" was just me misremembering an obscure phrase.
I think the more common form is alliterative -
OED: (as) queer as a coot (slang): conspicuously or flamboyantly homosexual; (also) conspicuously odd or peculiar. Cf. coot n.1 2b.

Another example of the bastardisation / evolution of the English Language. Originally "Queer" would simply mean "Unusual" / "Out of Sorts". "Gay" would merely mean "Happy" / "Brightly Coloured". Even most swear words have perfectly acceptable origins. It is merely their misuse over time that makes them offensive.

I hesitate to criticize the wonderful Jonathan Amos, but when describing New Horizons' selected pictures "Each new release brings surface features into sharper focus" would be a dreadful failure. Rather like the misaligned Hubble lens before the fix. Perhaps "Each new release brings surface features into sharper resolution" would be more accurate.

I merely note that back when I was a lad, marrying someone on the same day you first met would have been very difficult to arrange.
Peter Andre fans have gathered outside a south Devon venue where the star is rumoured to be marrying the woman he met in Plymouth today.

I'm a big Peter fan, always have been. I hope it works out for them both. He's such a lovely guy but very immature for his age, the age gap between he and Emily should level that out. lol

Maybe not illiterate, but I found this to be a bit odd.
In the headline link it states: Pluto 'little larger than anticipated'
While the scientist quoted actually stated: Pluto 'a little larger than anticipated'
One letter can make a little bit of difference, no?

'Sozzled' squirrel runs amok in club
Amok?
No, not amok. I don't believe the behaviour of the squirrel can carry the weight of that word, even in today's lax times.

I believe the report said that the squirrel was 'staggering around' after appearing from behind a box of crisps ! Hardly running 'amok' which would indicate that the animal had been running riot ! He sure is going to have one dreadful hangover!
