Vauxhall cannibals, whats this all about ?

Post by Bruv »

A bizarre crime wave is sweeping one part of England - thieves are stripping down Vauxhall cars as their owners sleep. Hundreds of owners have fallen victim - but why?

What a strange crime, why not just nick the car ?

This notion that there's a huge gang of mechanics going out after a hard day's work to strip parts off Vauxhalls in the early hours is really not convincing at all.

I've spent considerable thought on the problem.

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. (The Sign of Four)

Who is most likely to have a Haynes Manual for the car on the drive?

The owner, that's who.

Who's got least distance to travel to get to the car that's about to be stripped?

The owner.

Who's least likely to be challenged by the neighbours if seen stripping the car in the drive at 2am?

That's right.

An unspoken game is spreading through the land as more and more Vauxhall owners work out who's doing the stripping, get their toolkit out after watching the Epilogue, and make themselves £500 down the local repair yard for three hours work, after which they make another £500 inflating their insurance claim.

Stands to reason, Watson. I reckon that closes the case without leaving the smoking room.

The police have spoken: ""Clearly these offences are only being committed because there is a market for the stolen parts, so Bedfordshire Police needs the support of responsible vehicle owners to put a stop to the market that encourages such crime."

On the contrary, I reckon Bedfordshire Police needs the support of the irresponsible vehicle owners - the responsible ones aren't buying spares down the pub to begin with.

Responsible & irresponsible owners will get their parts wherever they can get them.

That is why the crime is more common in the area, I hadn't twigged the relevance until I read this part....."Vauxhall vehicles are particularly popular in Bedfordshire due to the long-standing connection of the company with the local area"

Was Vauxhall named after the vehicle or was the vehicle named after the place?

It has also given its name to the Vauxhall Parliamentary Constituency, which extends to include all of Stockwell and parts of Brixton and Clapham all to the south, and to the Vauxhall Motors car manufacturer, which originated in the area, and possibly also to the Russian word for a large railway station
