The news this morning is that North Korea is being unreasonable by reverting its clocks to Standard Korean Time, GMT+8.5, which was abolished by the Japanese when they invaded Korea in 1910.
Japan remained in Korea as occupiers until 1945, when Korea liberated itself. The country was then divided by the Western invasion of 1950 which left two halves, the Korean-led North and the Western-occupied South.
To mark the 70th anniversary of self-liberation, North Korea is re-establishing the original time zone. Why on earth does anyone have a problem with that?

Just ask the question.......why do they feel the need ?
Because they can ?

Where does it say anything about NK being unreasonable about their time zone?
I missed that part.
I think there was a shift in the wind currents as the entire population of the world let out a collective yawn.

Does anyone really care about Kim's insane notions? Don't forget this is a country run by someone who made it a law that everyone have a hairstyle like his own. You can't expect rules governing major issues like this to make sense. I wouldn't even be surprised if he tried to decimalise the time zones in North Korea - really, I wouldn't.

There is only one timezone in North Korea. What on earth does "decimalise the time zones in North Korea" mean?
The South Korean government has also been discussing a change back to the pre-Japanese-Empire Korean timezone of GMT+8.5, North Korea is just jumping on the Whole-Korea bandwagon by making the same proposal.
Is the South Korean government proposal to change back to the pre-Japanese-Empire Korean timezone of GMT+8.5 also an "insane notion"? Or is it only an "insane notion" when it comes from North Korea?
Since it comes from both parts of the currently-divided Korea, but only an "insane notion" when it's from the North, do you think perhaps you're a bit biased? Surely the idea of rejecting the Japanese-enforced change is just as valid or invalid whichever government puts it forward.
The population of the entire Korean peninsula, north and south, was enslaved by the Japanese for 35 years. The continued use of Japan's timezone is an affront to Korean dignity. They want their original timezone back.
They also, north and south, seek and desire reunification. The major stumbling block to that is the continued foreign occupation of the South.

I'm still wondering where you got the "Insane notion" thing from.
You seem to have set up a straw dog to knock about.
I don't think anyone cares all that much.
Though, now the South will rethink the idea, just because the North did it first.

Not at all, it's a direct quote from the preceding post: "Does anyone really care about Kim's insane notions?"

I mean that the rest of the world operates of a standard system in units of whole hours & has done so for hundreds of years now. To revert to a half hour one at the whim of nutty dictator hardly seems sane. You could argue that the Korean time zone predates the international standard, but in that case you could argue that all non-Christian countries should change the International Standard of dating years.
As for decimalising time, I meant that it wouldn't surprise me if he tried to make things to be 10 hours in a day.

Is there any chance you could look up, for instance India, and then come back to the thread with a revised comment?
Big country, India.

I must admit that I didn't realise that. Still seems nutty to me, though.

North Korea becomes the 15th country to do it, and one in five of the world's population uses it as their own time. It's all to do with where the sun is overhead at noon, you know. It's an aspect of geography.
