Chrissie Hynde and rape
Singer Chrissie Hynde has come under fire for suggesting it can be a woman's fault if she is raped.
"You know if you don't want to entice a rapist, don't wear high heels so you can't run from him," she said, in an interview in the Sunday Times.
The Pretenders singer, 63, said she takes "full responsibility" after she was sexually assaulted aged 21 in Ohio.
Is this a considered opinion or a "Look at me look at me" statement ?

I would have to say, "Yes."
There is a certain logic behind the idea that one can "avoid being a victim."
I mean, there are things you should do to avoid being bitten by a dog, or a shark, or to avoid being hit by a train, that sort of thing, that suggests that you bear some responsibility for some things that can happen to you.
But these are generally around activity with creatures that have no real intellectual investment in the event, or non-living entities.
If a woman dresses in a provocative fashion, then perhaps she might increase the probability of attracting unwanted attention, but that should, in no way, transfer responsibility from the attacker to the victim.

"I don't think I am saying anything controversial, am I?" she concluded.
This is "look at me look at me" situation.

What exactly is dressing in a provocative fashion? In some places having your hair undone or showing your face will get you in to serious trouble. There are people who think women should not wear trousers just a there are those who think skirts should be of a certain length.
It's never the vcrtims fault - used to be if you took advantage of a woman when she was drunk or otherwise helpless it was frouwned upon now she's asking for it.
In her recently completed autobiography, Reckless, Hynde recounts how she was forced to perform sexual acts on members of an Ohio motorcycle gang who had promised to take her to a party, but instead took her to an abandoned house.
"Technically speaking, however you want to look at it, this was all my doing and I take full responsibility," said the singer, who recalled being high on drugs at the time.
Naive perhaps, stupied even but askig ti nbe gang raped? Come off it if you take advantage of someone you are in the wrong no matter what excuse you kid yourself with.

Going off ALONE with a Motorcycle Gang? While drunk? Maybe she wasn't asking, but she should have been Expecting.
Stay away from Gangs of men should be her advice. Nice stuff never happens in that situation.
All women have stories of dangerous or disgusting encounters with men while committing the crime of being out in public, Alone, or Together with other women & almost all are UNavoidable.

I see her 'confession' as being a way of coping with her error of judgement for putting herself in such situations.

She passed an opinion based on her own experience when she was very young and naive. I do tend to agree with her to a certain extent. Young girls/women should not flaunt themselves if they are out in public. I know it shouldn't be, but unfortunately IT IS a risk that some fellas may think that they would be on to a good thing if they saw a girl/woman dressed in skimpy clothes which hardly cover her 'bits' up. With this in mind their male instincts take over and thinking that if the girl/woman is dressed like that then, to them she must be 'gagging for it'. The most sensible behaviour for women when they are out and about, is to dress in a sensible and non-provocative way. OK they want to go dancing, but common sense should tell them to cover up sensibly and wear a coat till they get to their venue !
It shouldn't be like this, but the fact is that some men think they have a right to sexually assault females, particularly if the female wears provocative clothes !
Also, the attacker is the guilty person and the girl/woman on the receiving end is always the victim, regardless of circumstances leading up to the assault.
This is my opinion, for what it's worth.
As a P.S. I do think she intended to say something 'controversial', and expected publicity. Lo and behold, she's got her publicity and they've spelled her name correctly too !!!!!

I think that it is sad that she has spent all of these years partially blaming herself for what was done to her. That must be a terrible weight to carry.

Yes, Wandrin, it is a hellova burden to carry for all those years. Her guilt about being so naive as to let herself be tempted to go with that gang. You never forget such a terrible experience. You never shake off the guilt of being fooled, of allowing the abuse in the first place. I expect she was so ashamed of the incident that she just would not want to tell a soul, until she was much older. Some victims never admit such incidents and take the guilt to their graves.
This sort of thing happens to children who have experienced the trauma of sexual assault, and I suppose that is why so many are now (as adults) coming forward with dreadful stories , particularly when they see other adults admitting that they have been sexually assaulted as children. It is a horrifying fact that there is so much of this sort of crime in the world, and I doubt that these terrible incidents will decrease, until punishment is so severe that potential attackers will be put off even thinking about sexually attacking children and women. But I really don't think governments these days have got the nouse to do anything like that ! So these sexual assaults will continue and continue.

Okay, I'll re-phrase that .....................desperately wanting sexual satisfaction.............. will that do? 'Gagging for it' is a commonly used phrase in the UK when referring to people (male or female) who are, seemingly, very keen (for want of a better word!) to have sex ! Not sure if the same phrase is used in America. :-3

Nope, not. I don't have to explain my reference, do I? Thought it was Universal. Just making a pun.
