A High Court judge has been asked to decide whether or not bridge is a sport.

Seriously ? What is this all about ?

Bridge ??? Silly season story

What about Monopoly, Whist, dominoes, snakes and ladders, pontoon, draughts ????? one could fill this page with potential 'sitting down' games. Sport, surely, involves a certain amount of physical input. I think it was a bit daft to say that certain games that involved mental ability could be included as a 'sport' because those games did, in fact, excercise the brain ! I suppose Chess, draughts, cribbage etc. could be called sports as they did not rely on luck, but were totally dependent on the players' skill.

But I would not have thought for one moment that any card game could ever be called a sport. Even Bridge involves a certain amount of luck doesn't it ? Card games have cards dealt to each player and that involves luck. Skill is involved during the game by the players doing the best they can with what cards they are dealt, so it is not wholly skillful is it.

I suppose gambling clubs will be putting in for sports funding at some stage too !!! Are people totally barmy ?

I'm not sure whether you've tried playing 32 hands in an evening, or 64 hands on a tournament day, but it's a marathon of sorts. One has to get a move on.

I remember playing a tiddleywink tournament on our sitting room floor, when I was in my 20's which lasted several hours into the wee small hours of the morning. I lost ! ............................. I remember, too, that I had flat knees for about 2 days afterwards ! ........ boohoo

Whack-a-Mole (very energetic).

Blow football (requires high level of breath control - and uses a ball).

Pinball (very energetic & very skilled).

Operation (skilled delicate motor control).

All of these fall within the conditions required to class as "Sports".

Does sounding silly but when money is concerned.

The EBU argues that it is being unfairly excluded from special VAT exemptions for sporting competitions, worth about £100,000 a year in total to event organisers.

Consider:

"When ruling on what constituted a sport in the 2011 Charities Act, Parliament specifically included 'mind sports', stating that sport comprised 'activities which promote health involving physical or mental skill or exertion'."

The Telegraph

I never played bridge but from what little I know of it, mental would qualify.
What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?
She had the black vote all locked up.

By that definition, singing in my choirs could be classed as a sport. It's a communal physical activity, with multiple mental & physical health benefits.
