Stop Jumping!

Post by AnneBoleyn »

On this site only, my screen jumps up & down & it's really annoying & makes it difficult to write anything. WHY is this happening? Happens on the Arcade, too. :-5

Well, I am not seeing a jumping screen. But then, I have AdBlock, so I don't see any ads.

Never happened until recently. What's the solution, being Green? Leaving now, or I'll have to take Dramamine. See you tomorrow.

The code core here is, I think, stable (other than the unresolved 500 Server Error), and I've never seen the effect as it's described though I do know what it looks like from other places on the Internet.

Here's how it happens. A browser has a display-rendering engine. It will know the size of the display area. The site is rendered, but the consequence of the rendering is that a second pass is performed in order to put in place areas the size of which were unknown on the first pass. A consequence of the second pass is that the size of some screen section changes, generating a third pass, and so on. The fluctuation gives rise to the juddering that Anne has seen. Different window display sizes will either trigger or clear the problem.

My immediate reaction is that there are several rendering engines available - Firefox has one, IE another, Chrome a third, Opera is different again. I would be surprised if the fluctuation is common to all of these engines unless there's a genuine cause.

The genuine cause is, as has been speculated, likely to be the ads. I suggest that if all the engines give the same judder, you install the Firefox add-on Adblock Edge, restart Firefox, log back in and see if it's cured. If it is then perhaps there's an AdBlock variant for your browser of choice and you could try the same fix there. I don't think advert income generated from members forms the predominant source of revenue for the site, I think it's visitors, so I don't think it will damage the finances unduly if some people give this a go.

Yes, this has happened to me in the arcade while playing, the whole screen moves off site?

That started a few days ago?

I think we need to clarify what we mean by site, display, screen and window if we're going to try explaining what the effect looks like.

Yes, Patsy, I can't complete the game as the screen moves, slows down, etc. So this is happening to you too I see.
