OK I am going down market now......a bit of light relief.
I made an unambiguous thread title so Spot doesn't wander in here unsuspectingly.
This is for those amongst us that watch the X Factor.....or.....like me....have it on to keep the peace.
How cruel are those six seats?
I thought that sort of cruelty was finished in the coliseums of Rome, if we were doing it to children or a minority it would be illegal.

I too watch it because it's on and my wife insists. Yeah, that old chestnut.
I don't like the chairs at all. Unnecessary and sometimes makes me cringe
I also don't like that every year, a talented singer has to leave and an awful one gets a good run

In my defence.....that old chestnut.....I retain control of the remote, but we have house guests, and I was reminded that we could catch it all on Plus 1, so I conceded foolishly.
The whole program is a controlled scripted entertainment, nothing to do with being a talent show. Why the contrived addition of seats,on stage,in front of the audience anyway ?
It is simply to get the audience whipped up to a frenzy, like the Coliseums of Rome or the old wrestling fiasco where everyone is 'in on the act' except the more gullible audience members. The X Factor professionals involved, allow care in the community acts through the first round auditions so they can be laughed at and humiliated on TV, unless I am missing something and they are 'in on the act' as well. Many wouldn't pass a karaoke first round in a pub, let alone a national TV program, looking for the X factor.

Why is it that screeching women and screeching falsetto blokes and the over-use of voice wobble (oublies as Tom Jones calls them ) seem to impress these four judges of X Factor !!?? I personally can't stand it. To me it is not proper singing and the only thing they will be successful in doing is ruining what voice they do have ! Using frequent 'oublies' is so irritating to me, so affected !
In all the young men who sang to try to progress further in the competition, there was only one who sang his song straight and I cannot recall him singing a single wobble at any point in the song. It was such a refreshing change, and I hope he does well. I think his name was Simon Lynch and I believe he came from the Isle of Man. I wish him luck.
By the way, I think that the 6 chairs level is so cruel, and I don't think viewers like it at all, so Simon Cowell, perhaps you'd better dispose of that particular level ! For anybody who doesn't watch X Factor, there is a level after what they call the boot camp, where there are 6 chairs on stage in a line. There are probably 12 hopefuls hoping to sing well enough to merit sitting on one of those chairs and consequently being passed for the next level. Six of those hopefuls will be disappointed. That is bad enough in itself, but when the chairs have already been filled and there are 4 or 5 more to come and sing, if one of them sings well enough that the judge will accept them, one of the 'sitting tenants' has to be removed to allow for the newcomer ! You can imagine how devastated that person will be, having managed to get a chair, they are then removed ! How sadistic !
