Mega Earthquake ? Really ?

North and South America will "split" and mega tsunamis could "strike America and Asia killing 40 million people" in an earthquake described as “imminent, by a London-educated nuclear engineer.

A London educated nuclear scientist reckons it could be this coming weekend.

That's kinda new. I guess this will be a bad weekend for a surfing vacation in Costa Rica.

The only things connecting North and South America are bridges, or lock-gates, one or the other.

Actually a rather significant land mass connects North and South America.

The isthmus of Panama. The canals and lakes of the Panama canal barely scratch the surface of the land.

Well, I suppose if there was a sudden complete subduction of the Caribbean Plate, that could create quite a disturbance, and leave the North and South American continents disconnected. But, that is about as likely as India suddenly finding itself in Siberia.

This guy doesn't seem to have a good grasp of Plate Tectonics.

I was thinking similar thoughts, Lars, hence my earlier comment. If there was a sudden subduction, the resulting earthquakes would be felt world-wide, and we would probably be getting uncomfortably close to an 'extinction level event' for mankind.

Maybe this nuclear engineer should confine himself to proclamations within his qualified field, as opposed to making wild and unverifiable claims that will doubtless frighten impressionable and less knowledgeable folk?

When the likes of you or I come up with a theory, it's unlikely to unsettle many folk, due to our lack of qualifications in the relevant field. When a nuclear engineer makes this kind of 'off the wall' prediction, it carries quite a bit more weight in some folk's minds, simply because he's got serious (if irrelevant)

qualifications in a complex field.

Well IMO, there is a distinct danger lurking beneath at least North America. I saw a very thought provoking documentary programme a while ago, concerning the Yellowstone Park area. Apparently this 'Park' stretches across America in an enormous swathe of land and beneath the surface there are many rumblings and movements, and although comparatively small at the moment, a warning has been put out that there could be a massive eruption at, basically, any time now or maybe many decades or even hundreds of years from now. Nobody can say or give a better time scale, so the world will have to wait.

If this 'eruption' should occur, and the various scientists predict that it will, America would disappear and the rest of the world would be greatly affected in one way or another ! I will add, however, that I understand that there has been a tremendous eruption in Yellowstone area before, causing land mass to alter dramatically. Perhaps somebody can confirm this for me, or otherwise, and indicate the possible time this occurred (or didn't) !

Well, actually, there are three land masses involved, and the canal traverses a portion of the middle one.

"Imminent" takes on a slightly different meaning in geological terms, though, doesn't it. It could mean tomorrow, or sometime in the next 5,000 years. It's all relative.

As I understand it, though, the San Andreas one is well overdue.

Obviously, the damage Yellowstone does is dependent on the scale of the eruption. Last time it erupted 'big-time', it formed quite a lot of North America.

Hope it doesn't 'blow it's top' anytime soon. It will be a 'game-changer' for mankind if it does....
