China population slump ?

Post by Bruv »

China has decided to end its decades-long one-child policy.

Couples will now be allowed to have two children.

I have always had a grudging admiration for the resolve that installed such a drastic policy.

Now it seems to have been all for nothing.

Maybe the Chinese will stop abandoning female babies now. I remember those terrible pictures of babies lying in the gutter. I'm not sure how widespread that was, but it did happen.

I suspect it will not stop. Better odds for the girl is precedded by her would be brother.

Why would you suspect that ?

And for clarification..................what does the 2nd sentence mean (I have tried to rearrange the words and can still not make sense)

Oooops Sorry about that.

I suspect it will not stop. Better odds for the girl if her birth is preceded by the birth of a boy giving the parents at least one son.

So The Dawg believes the Chinese discard female children regardless of external pressure ?

I believe there are a lot of bachelors with no chance of ever marrying due to a lack of females.

And that the change of track is an economic decision rather than an ethical one.

That has been a popular urban legend for a long time now.

I remember hearing that soon after the Chinese government instituted the 'one child' rule.

I am sure that there could be found some real cases of such a thing happening, but I doubt that it was pandemic of modern Chinese society.

Something is going on over there.

Tough battle forecast for gender imbalance

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- China still faces a steep challenge in achieving a normal gender balance, according to an official with the top health authority.

This is despite a continual drop in the nation's highly skewed gender ratio in births over the past six years.

In an effort to remedy the imbalance, the National Health and Family Planning Commission pursued 2,014 cases involving illegal fetus gender identification and gender-selective abortion in the first half of the year, said Zhou Gongwei.

Zhou, head of the commission's Gender Equality Office, was speaking to China Daily in an exclusive interview.

China had set a goal of reducing the ratio of boys to girls, now at 115.88, to below 115, but the target has been hard to meet. "Gender selection is still rampant," said Zhou, whose office operates under the commission's Family Development Department.

In the first half of this year, 42 people were prosecuted for gender selection offenses, and 10 healthcare workers and 14 medical institutions had their licenses revoked, the commission said.

The raising of children in poor countries has always been the only insurance for the parent's old age.

There is a rise in the male birth rate after long periods of abstinence,as happens during war, maybe the Chinese imbalance will rectify itself after a while.
