Baseball Brain Buster

Post by Mark Aspam »

Many years ago, I had a clock-radio that woke me every weekday at 6am.

It was tuned to a station that had an hour-long news summary every morning.

At exactly fifteen minutes past the hour, there would be a "daily puzzle".

The answer would not be given until the following day, giving the listener plenty of time to think it over.

I was usually able to solve the puzzle, but this one was really tough, and here it is, with the quoted matter my approximation of the puzzle as presented:

"We've all heard of game-ending bases-loaded home runs, where the home team is trailing by three runs and then ends the game with a grand-slam four-run homer.

"That doesn't happen very often, but even more rare is the FIVE-run homer. How is this possible?"

I wracked my brain but could not think of any situation that would allow a five-run homer. I waited patiently for the answer on the next morning's broadcast.

But I forgot to set my alarm and woke up too late to hear the answer. DANG!!

I thought about it for weeks...months...YEARS, but could not come up with a solution.

Then, just a few years ago, my son and I were discussing the matter, and we THINK that we have the solution.

Would anyone else like to try? I'll reveal our answer in a week!

OK, I bite and PM'd you an answer.

Here's one for ya.

Q: "Who hit the only Game Seven World Series walk-off home run?"

A: Bill Mazeroski

What I want to know is what is a walk-off home run?

Perhaps you know how I felt when I went to the pub with some Brit co-workers, and they all started in on the Cricket tournament.

I did figure out what the Batsman is supposed to be doing, almost.

Some years ago I learned of a park where Cricket was played every week. I went down to watch and could not make heads or tails of it. After I got home, looked it up. Studied the rules and went back to watch.

The failure to understand was mine. They all seemed to have fun, go for it.

I would have shared your feelings.

I shall have to say this quietly...........never really got into the boring game, two teams play for a week, it rains and they call it a draw.

Cricket's easy to understand :-

Definition of cricket

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

Here is our answer, which we're pretty sure is correct: It just so happened that the game-ending batter lived right down the street from the ballpark! He was so elated at having won the game that after crossing the plate (as the fourth run) he kept right on running and RAN HOME!

PatsyHi Patsy, I think your 714 figure is about right for the American League. He played his last season, WAY past his prime, for the National League Boston Braves and hit just 6 homers.

P.S. One more thing about the Bambino that should be noted: Yes, he was a great home run hitter, but he also struck out A LOT!
