In the "You couldn't make it up" department.....
Lidl is recalling its own-brand tinned herring fillets - because their packaging does not warn shoppers they may contain FISH.
This could possibly be yet another shot in the EU in or out war.
I would like to know the logic behind the recall.

Wait! so I get that, perhaps it should mention the gluten thing. I mean, If I bought a tin of herring, I would expect it to have fish, but I might not expect any wheat gluten.
But the article gets onto some odd corners with all of that.
I love the labeling over here. Imagine a sack of potato chips having big bold letters telling me that it is Gluten-free. (well, DUH!)

It's more like buying a packet of salted peanuts and then demand a "This may contain nuts" warning.

I have to point out that this is another one of the great "Journalism moments"
The actual statement from the company was more along the lines of "But the tins' labels did not feature warnings that they contain potential allergens, including fish, milk, egg, mustard and gluten."
So there are some actual items there that would be unexpected in a tin of "Herrings in tomato sauce" Milk, wheat Gluten, for example.
It was the overall requirement that the label contain that warning "in English" that caused the stuff to be pulled from the market in the UK.
And, yes, here in the states, when you buy a jar or tin of Peanuts, or Peanut Butter, there is a label warning that the product was prepared in a plant where peanuts were processed, and that it may contain some peanuts or peanut residue.

Both Lidl and Aldi have become ever more popular. There was an initial suspicion about these newcomers to the market but the quality and cheap prices have won us over.

Only a couple of weeks ago I posted a photo of some cheese I got from Tesco, with the label "Contains Milk". A couple of years ago I also posted one of a pair of scissors, also from Tesco, saying "May contain traces of nuts". The whole H&S thing is beyond a joke.
