Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day
Today is Armed Forces Day, I discovered this morning there has been one since 2006.
Am I alone in finding a subtle change in the British view of our armed forces ?
I find it just slightly disturbing.

You missed National Cream Tea Day yesterday.
I'd not call it subtle at all, it's Tommy-can-do-no-wrong adulation in the worst possible taste without the slightest justification.

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

You think that's something - this one's been going since 1995. Not Tommy, but Jack.

But is it the cream or jam on first?
The Royal British Legion is dwindling, I'm guessing they are trying to bolster it with Armed Forces theme.

It's a sibtle way of conflating criticism of our foreign policy such as invasion of iraq, afghanistan etc etc with criticism of our armed forces. If you criticise going to war you are not supporting the armed forces who are after all protecting us etc etc. .

There is a decided difference between Defence & Offence though.

As the saying goes the best defence is a good offence, the invasion of iraq was in part justified to defend us against saddam hussein using wmd's. We were attacking before he attacked us.

You know as well as the rest of us that Saddam Hussein and his administration had no intention, and never would have had any intention, of attacking any European country with any weaponry at all much less the USA. Even when his country was attacked he made no such move. Your lie of "the best defence is a good offence" would be laughable if it hadn't resulted in a million and a half deaths in Iraq alone.

I was pointing out how opposition to the war becomes conflated with not supporting our soldiers while they are defending us from attack, invading iraq was "justified" as an act of defence not by me but by those who supported it. Yes I did know he had no wmd's that much was blindingly obvious. as Robin cook pointed out we knew exactly what he had because we (the west) sold it to him. If he's had them we probably wouldn't have invaded.

Ironically, it is only because Iraq's military forces are so weak that we can even contemplate its invasion. Some advocates of conflict claim that Saddam's forces are so weak, so demoralised and so badly equipped that the war will be over in a few days.
We cannot base our military strategy on the assumption that Saddam is weak and at the same time justify pre-emptive action on the claim that he is a threat.
There is not a decided difference between offence and defence imo.

If you want peace, prepare for war
I sometimes think we've not progressed very much since roman times.

If you want peace, refuse to fight.

I cannot agree with that but I firmly believe that any country that starts a war is guilty and the leaders that ordered it should be tried for war crimes.

Armed Forces Day
Unfortunately there are some aggressive people in the world, some times aggressive people control nations.
Sometimes the aggressive people are around at the same time as paranoiac colleagues or presume their 'enemies' are aggressive....and nations.....the same as macho men, don't like to appear weak, unmanly.
Anybody who has witnessed a drunken brawl know the routine, the manly posturing, until one or other goes too far.
Best to be prepared and wise enough to keep the posturing to a minimum,it could be you that gets the bloody nose.

Like the decisions to invade countries & getting involved in wars that have nothing to do with us. What has that to do with Defence?
