In 1922, the first Newberry Medal, recognizing excellence in children's literature, was awarded to "The Story of Mankind" by Hendrik Willem van Loon on this day.

It's a really excellent book, not a "history" book at all. More of history as a "story.' I read it cover to cover in two days almost non-stop.
