I've been obliged to open the news item and reed it to discover why I've been admonished. Mr Bolt runs to honour Jamaica, something of which I was unaware. It just shows the danger inherent in relying on a headline.

How on earth do you win a running race by physically diving over the finish line? Dont you have to run to the finish line? Shouldnt she be disqualified?

No no - I think madam is criticizing those sports where performances aren't all simultaneous, where one chap does a thing while being timed and then another and then a third, and all the times are sorted at the end. Unlike Athletics where it's whoever breasts the tape before anyone else.

I am sure 'madam' can answer for herself, she will be along in a while.
Any opinions about those cycling outfit designs. Both male and females have cod piece type panels................what is that all about ?
Quite disconcerting.

Bruv those codpieces are actually protection against rubbing and chafing, and I believe for cycling it's made of a moleskin. This is what I was told by my brother who cycles 100's of kilometers for charities.

oh the sacrifices of the mole...
Moleskin is a heavy cotton fabric, woven and then sheared to create a short, soft pile on one side. In feel and appearance its nap is similar to felt or chamois, but less plush than velour. The word is also used for clothing made from this fabric, as well as adhesive pads stuck to the skin to prevent blisters.

Why don't they make mole skin saddles ?
Or do you think the mole skin cod piece makers would complain ?

At the time she did her 'dive' for the gold medal the commentators said she had stumbled ! Stumbled ??? It was patently obvious that she deliberately 'dived' to get across the line first. Unfortunately I don't think that there is a rule that states you have to have one foot on the ground when crossing the winning line. I don't suppose that ruling will actually be brought in because, if you look at pics of race finishers, a lot of them are in mid air at the point of crossing the line !!

I didn't know they were timed.
By the way, did anybody watch the ladies hockey GBR v New Zealand, in the semi finals. GBR beat NZ 3-0 and proceed to the gold medal final against Holland. For about 10 minutes there were only 9 GBR players as two were injured and being attended to, one having stitches in a head wound. The other suffered a hockey ball full in the face ! Now for the uninitiated, a hockey ball is fairly solid and quite heavy, not unlike a cricket ball, if you know what a cricket ball is like. It certainly is no fun receiving a hard blow to the face with a hockey ball ! The final will be shown from 9pm on Friday.

and the athletes being times, from time to time are competing against their own times, from the past. Tough to omit timed races.
Funny from country to country how the coverage of the Olympics go. Last night in the ..... 200M sprint was a hoot to watch, Bolt was smiling away at our young Canadian De Grasse and the challenge they both presented to each other was fun to watch. I admire athletes who compete but are gracious to their competitors.

How can a country the size of the UK come second to the USA in the medal table ?
Most countries make substantial payments per gold medal, some give a pension for life, the UK pay nothing, only funding the training of the most promising athletes, I wonder how the costs compares ?

We ought to use the fact that the athletes didn't get awarded any money for winning, by rubbing that fact into the faces of every overpaid footballer who failed at every major tournament for the last 40 years.
Our Olympic athletes are an inspiration, while our footballers are an embarrassment.

I just this moment heard each medal cost the UK 2 million pound, presumably down to the training facilities and supporting the top athletes while they train.
If this translates into a healthier population it will be a good investment.

I'm not sure how the funds are meted out are entirely fair. The lesser sports dont get the funding that, say, the cyclists do.
But I suppose its far more productive to support the cyclists rather than those that play water polo or Greco - Roman wrestling
