Help and advice.....please

Post by Bruv »

I received the following email this evening...........

A quick Google seems to link to Poland.

What is the right reaction ?

It is on an old account linked to my IPS and used for Ebay only.

Should I be concerned ?

I am bothering you for a very urgent occasion. Allhough you don't know me, but I have considerable ammount of personal info about you. The thing is that, most probably by mistake, the data of your account has been emailed to me.

For example, your address is:

Correct address

I am a law-abiding citizen, so I decided to prevent may have been hacked. I pinned the file - Bruv.dot that was sent to me, that you could learn what data has become reachable for deceivers. Document password is - 5653

I look forward to hearing from you,

Lecia Daniello

On no account open the .dot

Absolutely do not reply to the email.

If you want to send me the .dot I'll open it safely and send you the text content, if there is any text content. I'll strip out the malware.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx will reach me.

Assuming the UK is similar to the US, home addresses can be found in lots of places, and bank account info is on every check you've ever written. I wouldn't worry much. Spot will shake it out and see what's there. You're on a Linux box too, right? Most of this malware usually only do damage to windows machines. Though I suppose the aim is to get into your email, which, if web-based, is neutral and exposed.

I haven't written a cheque in years, the email is downloaded to my laptop onto Thunderbird, the account only ever gets the same advertiser from Ebay

Can't say I am worried too much, but would like to know how exposed I am.

Not yet, he must be busy. It wouldn't take that long to empty my bank account.

You should now have an email.

It's an attempt to steal your online persona - accounts and passwords, some of which might be financial.

The claim to know more about you looks bogus. What they've demonstrated with this very targeted email is that they know

your name

your postal address

your email address

I can't see anything else they might have on their system. It's not a great deal, but it would definitely be something any eBay trader would have if they'd dealt with you.

Someone who had stolen a login to an eBay trader would have that information and be working through all the people they might con.

This suggests they may also know:

Your taste in latex bodywear

Your bra size

How much you spend each month on water-based lubricants

- depending, of course, on which eBay trader they broke into.

They were for a fancy dress party officer honestly.

Many thanks, have posted the information to Virgin's forum where I go to whinge when I need to.

I wonder if it could be a Ebay and Virgin combined related problem ?

Could be not so long ago Virgin were telling users to change their passwords as their mail system had been compromised
