Sir Bruce Forsyth: TV legend dies aged 89

As a game show host he was brilliant, as a song and dance man he left me cold.

Our Brucie RIP

Bruce was a true entertainer. I'm not really into dance or tap dance but I could appreciate the hard learned skill. But as you say Bruv, it would be very difficult to find anybody who was such a skillful and entertaining game show host. It was obvious that he loved working on game shows and that is why he always commanded high audience ratings. Bruce, thank you for such splendid entertainment - you will be sadly missed by millions ! R.I.P.

I've often tried to puzzle out this curious category of camp performer. One thing I've never successfully discovered is whether there is such a thing in the USA or not. It's not a simple matter of sexual orientation as Bruce Forsyth himself showed. Nobody could have mistaken Mr Forsyth for gay but he was totally camp. As was, for example, Cilla. Americans perhaps just think camp equates to British.

As a category I have spent a lifetime admiring its practitioners, from Round the Horne through Up Pompeii - I'm not sure of a current example, now I think about it. Is Grayson Perry camp? I don't think he is. David Walliams can be when the fit takes him and there are few performers I admire more. The wonderful Eddie Izzard can be but mostly avoids it. But there's a modern-day crop who quite frankly repel me like Alan Carr or Graham Norton.

Anyway, no, Brucie as a performer did nothing for me though I admire his persistence and I'm pleased he pleasured so many generations of television viewers ever since the medium was invented.
