Alaska quake

Post by spot »

That was a thumping great earthquake an hour ago in Alaska, I expect it's the main news for the day. I hope people on the coast stay safe, it was very big and close to the surface.

The quake itself wasn't a problem.

It was the sort of quake where if it goes off two miles from your bed, you'd be briefly wondering whether your life insurance was double indemnity. I'm glad the waves fizzled before they reached inhabited areas.

I'm very glad that the tsunami warning was lifted. I know a few people who were probably jolted from sleep by the sirens before it was lifted.

The thing never noted in a USGS email announcement is the depth of water, and I expect the way it shelves is relevant too.

Here's the tale from a local - I'm on her blog email list, she writes wonderfully.

A friend in Anchorage said it wasn't really a big deal there. A bit a of shaking, no significant damage.
