Not what Venezuela needed this year.
The immediate nonsense figures: "at least 32 dead and dozens of buildings collapsed, says interim president". The real question is whether the dead number in thousands, the earthquake is on the populated coastal region and several cities are affected particularly the capital Caracas, Moron and Valencia.
Apartment blocks and malls have collapsed - not something that should happen these days.
This was 6pm local time yesterday, which is around 11pm UTC presumably, seven hours ago and still dark early morning now.

And a week on?
Not ideal, but still on the light side. More than 58,000 buildings damaged or destroyed does not speak well of the local building code.
Last Wednesday’s back-to-back quakes – which measured magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 – killed at least 1,943 people, injured more than 10,571, and left tens of thousands missing amid the rubble. The UN migration agency has said that up to 6.8 million people could be affected by the disasters, and would require shelter, water, sanitation, healthcare and essential relief items.
