The city of Rome has banned goldfish bowls, which animal rights activists say are cruel. The classic spherical fish bowls are banned under a new by-law which also stops fish being given away as fairground prizes.

I'd say no they're not going too far, putting a goldfish into a small bowl

is like putting a man in a small room for the rest of his life.

Here in England giving away goldfish at fairs has been banned for a couple of years now.

My classroom aquarium gets loads of goldfish every year, the ones the kids win in the neighborhood carnival. They live a good life with us! Some are still alive and healthy 5 years later..................but it is a big tank.

Even a fish bowl needs aeration and water changes every other day. Most Goldfish get to be 12 inches in nature so when they start outgrowing the fishbowl - they die.

Even the ones that ended up in a proper fishtank died, we threw the round bowl away when we learnt about the lack of oxygen.
