It`s pretty simple though...just post a pic of your pet(s) (I appologise in advance if this thread has already been done).

...My 15 years old cat, Sassy. She has diabeties and I have to give her 5 units of insulin in the morning and at night....thats right....a needle:-2 .....

Well, Mandy, I've spent a few minutes trying to think of how best I could
say this, and all I can really come up with is saying it right out.
That pic of your husky Dante concerns me. On a number of different levels.
Correct me if I'm wrong but he appears to be tied using a choke chain and
that is a HUGE no-no. His dog house is too large, in a climate like yours it
actually should be smaller so the animal can contain its' own body heat.
And it should have a flap over the door to keep out drafts. Yes, I know
this pic is not from a cold time of year and yes, I know he's a husky, but
there are still some basic steps that need to be taken for the animal's
comfort and well-being.
Above all what concerns me is the hard-packed earth around him. He
spends an awful lot of time there, I suspect day in and day out, and
that is not good for his mental health.
I just couldn't let this go without comment.

Actually...my father is a vet, and his home is where I keep my dog since I live in a tiny town house in the city and the yard is too small, so I go by his good judgement as far as collar and yard lead is concerned (His lead is nearly 70 feet long). During the winter, his house is filled to the brim with straw and hay for insulation, and his area is kept tilled about every other week to keep it nice and plush....the only reason it is dirt like that anyway is because he likes to dig and play with his bones....it started as beautiful green grass that he eventually ripped up playing.
I walk him nearly every day, and while I appriciate your concern, it offends me that you would insist I mistreat my animal. I love him to no end and I`m hurt at your comment. When I take him to the vet (and I do take him to someone other than my father) they tell me he is doing well in every aspect of the word....so I thank-you for your concern, I am glad to see an avid dog lover, but I feel no shame in the way I take care of my dog.

they do get things wrong sometimes. I've got a search started with
members of another board, and hopefully soon I will come up with some
stats for you re: choke chain damage to dogs.
That the vets tell you he's healthy is great, but that's only what they
see. They perhaps don't know his living conditions, am I right?
I saw the bits of straw, fine, I accept that but I still stand behind my

raised Siberians, I know what they can look like. I had a neighbor call
Animal Control on me once because my dog was outside and it "was cold".

While I am sure that Valerie meant no offense, I have to agree at least about the collar. Metal choke collars can be dangerous and should not be left on a dog left on it's own devices on a chain in the yard. I haven't had a metal choker in my house in going on 7 years now.
FYI - statistics show that chained dogs are responsible for the majority of fatal dog bites in the U.S., regardless of breed or gender. It takes away their ability to flee if they feel threatened and they tend to become territorial of their space.
I trust my vet on issues of my dogs health, period. I don't ask for advice on food or behavior (unless it is something I suspect is due to a health issue) because, well, my vet doesn't live with his patients - he sees them once a year. How he trains his chihuahua has nothing to do with how I train my rottweiler.

Hey Mandy, I don't think Val's intention was to insult you or hurt you at all. If I had been here when this was posted, I would have said much the same things. Val and I are 2 of the people in here that members come to about pet issues. I was a vet tech for several years and worked in animal behavior also. Val has similar experience. Our intentions are always for the good of the pets. Taking your photo alone, it does appear as if the dog isn't receiving the best care it could, so yeah, it's going to get questioned. What you should be is grateful that there are people here who truly care about animals, just like you do. There's no malice intended.

Mastiff's are quite popular in my area. No hip displaysia problems that I'm aware of. The guy I bought him from years ago, had both parents on his property and had no hip problems with his.

He's a people dog and will lap anyone he can. But what a drooler. I have photos with other people, but not digital. Just got my camera in fall and am learning how to use all features on it.

Space and time aren't a problem. Give him a kiddie couch and pillow and they are happy. Aren't an energetic dog at all. They'd love to be a lap dog, but what a lap you'd need! :wah:

Yes it's understandable not keeping pets with the long hours you put in at your job. I couldn't imagine not having any at all...but I don't keep the hours that you do and that would play an important role in pet ownership.
