school assighnment please help!!
hiya in college, one of my lessons we have been talking about racism and how it is ok for a black person to call a white person a bad name but not ok for the white person to say anything back. this does not bother me so much but a point i want to make is that why is it not the same for them to call me stupid because im blond or irish or something like that would no one find that just as offensive its all discrimination. i want peoples feed back on this subject so i can involve it in my assighnment. thank you DK

It depends how it's said and who said it. If some one I didn't know or wasn't a friend said " Oh she's loopy because she's blonde", I would be offended. My friends say it all the time but I know they don't mean it. I don't think they do :-3

ArnoldLayne wrote: It most certainly IS offensive to refer to Irish as stupid. Secondly, it depends on says and in what context, whether I am offended or not. I have friends who appear to call me some awful names but only THEY would be alowed to say them, no one else. Which is sorta the reason it is acceptable for blacks to use the *N* word to other blacks and not (quite rightly) whites to blacks
i most certainly agree thank you for your reply i will use this comment in my assignment

No it's not OK in my opinion. There isn no justification for name calling of any kind by any person, about another person, period. If some disagree, then tell me what the justification might possibly be.

Hi DK, its not right for anyone to call anyone anything degrogatory because of who they are. Some people do it because they are mean, some because they feel they have a grievance against a certain type of people, and some just do it for fun and don't really mean any harm, but it still isn't right. All people are basically the same and all should have a right to be who and what they are. Thats not just being nice, its a fact. So black people have no right to be prejudiced against people because they are white, or use names that single out white people, no more than white people should do it to black people or anyone else. The same thing goes for calling Scottish people mean, or Irish people stupid, or American people fat or anything of that nature. Anyway, people that engage in that type of behaviour are either very immature and foolish, or are allowing themselves to become too angry and emotional and need to learn to calm down a bit before they say anything.

yep it's all in how it's said. Hey nigger is awful because for generations it has been an awful derogatory term. Hey Homie is not so bad because it is not said in a negative way. That may cause confusion as to why it is ok or not ok. When people use a term or name to be hurtful it is NEVER OK.

Maybe I'm a dummy, but what the Hell has this got to do with religion?? Your thread would would receive far greater readership on a general forum.

No problem----I know that was what your teacher said. I would like to know how she can justify saying that. Ask her/him.

DK, it's not acceptable for any derogatory remarks to be made to someone of a different race or colour
and frankly your teacher wants their arse kicking for spewing rubbish.
As to your other question, it's in a totaly different catagory and context,
to be called a "blonde bimbo" is stereotypical of how the media have portrayed us,
due to brainiacs such as Jordan, Pamela Anderson, Paris Hllton...
IMO of course.

Indeed - my first thread was put on a board where nobody could reply! I think it was Ladycop who told me why, so I'm certainly not knocking anybody. I mean, I used to be conceited, but now I'm just perfect!! LOL

It is just as unacceptable to call someone names because they have blonde hair. If other people do it, don't let them annoy you. Some people will always try to upset you and they will use anything to do it. Don't even think about it, if they are silly enough to think those things then you shouldn't waste your time worryig about what they say. When you are young those things can hurt a lot, but as you get older you realize that its all a load of nonsense.

It's never okay to call anyone names. They're just dumb stereotypes, anyway. Who really believes them?
Besides, it's human nature to put other people down. People make themselves feel better about themselves by doing this. Just think how many times you have a bad thought about someone else or you said something mean about someone else -- it's so common. It's human nature. Just deal. That's life and no one can change it.
P.S. Why did the blonde woman have bruises around her bellybutton?
Her boyfriend was blonde, too!
:wah: -- sorry, I had to.

I'm assuming that the class is some kind of humanities class. This explanation is in no way to be construed as my opinion on the rightness or wrongness of the situation.
Bigotry of black people against white people is generally less offensive because the white male is the more powerful category in our society. Think about a situation in which you are helpless and the person against whom you are helpless starts taunting you with derogatory remarks. Those remarks are all the more painful because you cannot retaliate. Now imagine yourself replying with equally derogatory remarks. Do you think your words will have any real effect? Not likely.
Does that scenario help at all?

Dude - I liked what ACC said. I will tell you my experience as a white woman with a college degree over 20 years of working..........it is not pleasant.
1976 - graduate college - worked at a TV station for 3.75 and hour. They hired a man for 4.50 an hour (same age) but he had a family to support - pissed me off - I bitched a fit and got equal pay because I worked as hard as he did. I did not get equal work experience being the only woman on a production team.

It's a useless and invalid categorization. One more excuse to refer to 'us' and 'them.' The very concept of 'race' is at the root of many of our society's problems. It doesn't even exist.
From dictionary.com
Usage Note: The notion of race is nearly as problematic from a scientific point of view as it is from a social one. European physical anthropologists of the 17th and 18th centuries proposed various systems of racial classifications based on such observable characteristics as skin color, hair type, body proportions, and skull measurements, essentially codifying the perceived differences among broad geographic populations of humans. The traditional terms for these populationsCaucasoid (or Caucasian), Mongoloid, Negroid, and in some systems Australoidare now controversial in both technical and nontechnical usage, and in some cases they may well be considered offensive. (Caucasian does retain a certain currency in American English, but it is used almost exclusively to mean “white†or “European†rather than “belonging to the Caucasian race,†a group that includes a variety of peoples generally categorized as nonwhite.) The biological aspect of race is described today not in observable physical features but rather in such genetic characteristics as blood groups and metabolic processes, and the groupings indicated by these factors seldom coincide very neatly with those put forward by earlier physical anthropologists. Citing this and other pointssuch as the fact that a person who is considered black in one society might be nonblack in anothermany cultural anthropologists now consider race to be more a social or mental construct than an objective biological fact.
